Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing because I came to know about your visit to Squamish hills for a camping holiday. I'd like to give you some suggestions and advice which would definitely help you through out your journey.
First of all, I wanted to tell you that the place you choose is the best thing. The star gazing , weather is so perfect over there that it will eliminate all the toxicity and negativity reaching at the destination. You will admire the view of the place when you wake up the next morning. As it is going to be your first time experience visiting for camping, you will enjoy it for sure.
Another thing I wanted to mention is that there are some of the drawbacks as well, One thing you need to keep in mind is that the area is well- surrounded by bear and racoon. In addition, you need to built your tent accordingly seeing the safer place. This is particularly important because while sleeping the animals can attack if not planned everything properly.
Finally, I really want to join you guys to go for camping but unfortunately, I have exams going on which allows me to step back from the plan. I would really appreciate it if you could follow all the instructions that I wrote.
Anyway, I hope to hear from you soon. Let me know how your camping went.
Best wishes,
Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why the friend would enjoy camping, identify relevant disadvantages (wildlife concerns), and state your inability to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why the friend would enjoy it is a bit vague, relying on general statements about 'toxicity and negativity' rather than specific camping benefits. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully extended and supported with concrete details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Another thing', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. While the structure is coherent, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the wildlife warning and the advice to build a tent could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a semi-formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'eliminate', 'admire', and 'unfortunately'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'well-surrounded by bear and racoon' (should be 'inhabited by bears and raccoons') and 'built your tent' (should be 'pitch your tent'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and learning common collocations related to outdoor activities would help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the place you choose is the best thing' (should be 'chose'), 'the area is well-surrounded by bear and racoon' (pluralization issues), and 'allows me to step back from the plan' (slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally fine, but there are minor slips in sentence construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural nouns when referring to wildlife.
