Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kally,

I hope you're good. I am thrilled to hear that you have made a plan for camping to Kamloops for the first time in your life this summer. I wanted to share some important things before your trip.

I just want to say that you would definitely enjoy your camping because the location you have chosen is mesmerising. I went there last year with my family and enjoyed it a lot. We were at the famous hill station Kashi and stay in the tent two days. During that time we packed so many things in the picnic basket like fruits, snacks, some home made meal which we ate in the beautiful mountain view. This was the special trip with my family members.

However, there may be difficulty for looking the parking spot where you can park your vehicle safety. I remember we spent a huge time to locate the place. Luckily we found one local guy who helped us finding perfect place for which we were searching for. So if you may face any situation like this us give me a call or message me.

I wish I could go with you this but as you know my manager will not be approved my vacation as I already tooa break from work last month. No worries we will make a plan next year for sure.

Keep in touch.

Yours lovingly,

Ammy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing a disadvantage, and stating your availability to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For example, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping focuses more on your own past experience rather than specific benefits for your friend. Additionally, the disadvantage regarding parking is a bit specific and could be expanded to include more general camping challenges. To improve, ensure that your ideas are more directly focused on the recipient's situation rather than just recounting your own personal anecdotes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Luckily', to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from your personal story to the disadvantage section is abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a more natural, fluid progression of ideas throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some descriptive language, such as 'thrilled' and 'mesmerising', which adds interest to the letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'made a plan for camping to Kamloops' (should be 'made plans to go camping in Kamloops') and 'difficulty for looking the parking spot' (should be 'difficulty finding a parking spot'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and prepositional usage to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'stay in the tent' (should be 'stayed in a tent'), 'helped us finding' (should be 'helped us find'), and 'my manager will not be approved my vacation' (should be 'will not approve my vacation'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of modal verbs and infinitives.
