Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sam,
I hope you and your family are doing good! I heard you are planning for a camping holiday and you need my advice for that.
There are numerous reasons that make camping enjoyable such as walking in forest, watching birds, sleep under open sky and best experience, I ever had that is cooking and campfire. I'm sure you would also love all of this.
Although camping is a very relaxing activity but there is a few drawbacks also which you should keep in mind and prepare yourself accordingly. First thing is mosquitoes and for them you need to keep mosquitoes ointment with you and secondly uncertain weather so keep warm clothes for cold weather or incase of rain.
I am also planning for camping with my husband, if you don't mind we can plan it together. We have camping experience and all the equipment needed for camp such as tent, chairs and other stuff and also shared camping would be pocket friendly for us.
I hope to hear from you soon. Take care and stay in touch.
Warm regards,
Jass,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable, identify relevant disadvantages like mosquitoes and weather, and extend an invitation to join you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent informal style. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more descriptive detail in your explanations, such as specific examples of the 'uncertain weather' or the types of 'equipment' you possess, to further flesh out the content.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'First thing', and 'secondly', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or simplistic. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'all of this') clearly points back to the preceding ideas to make the progression of the letter feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'uncertain weather' and 'pocket friendly' are used effectively in context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'doing good' instead of 'doing well' and 'mosquitoes ointment' instead of 'insect repellent'. The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'sleep under open sky' (should be 'sleeping under the open sky') and 'there is a few drawbacks' (should be 'there are a few drawbacks'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly run-on. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
