Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well my friend. I am writing this letter in context to advice for your upcoming camping adventure.

First of all, I will recommend you to visit Banff National Park, which is in Calgary Canada. The scenic view from outside your camp will be phenomenal. Not only you will admire the trekking on hills but will also be mesmerized with the beauty of various lakes such as Peyto, Loui and Moraine.

It is an undeniable fact that the camping place is full of adventure but it also carries few drawback, visitors have encountered beer attack before and it is recommended to carry beer spray with you all the time. The camping site, does not have network connection, making it herculean to contact in the case of an emergency.

I am working extra hours at work currently so that I can receive a vacation in summer. I would invite you and will go for another camping which will take place for 3 days up in the hills. It will be super fun will learn new skills and will be able to overcome our fear of animals and heights.

I hope you find this letter into consideration and will perform appropriate steps for survival.

Your best friend,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the beauty of the lakes, you could have elaborated more on the specific activities your friend might enjoy. Additionally, there is a significant error in your description of the disadvantages: you wrote 'beer attack' and 'beer spray' instead of 'bear'. This confusion impacts the clarity of your advice, as it suggests a humorous or nonsensical danger rather than a genuine safety concern.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all' and 'In addition' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'I am writing this letter in context to advice'. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'phenomenal', 'mesmerized', and 'herculean'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that affect the quality of your writing. The most significant issue is the confusion between 'bear' and 'beer', which changes the meaning of your advice entirely. Additionally, 'in context to advice' is not a natural collocation. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, these inaccuracies prevent a higher score. Focusing on correct spelling and common collocations will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Not only you will admire... but will also be mesmerized'. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I will recommend you to visit' should be 'I would recommend that you visit', and 'the camping place is full of adventure' is slightly unnatural. You also have issues with article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'I would invite you and will go'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score in this criterion.
