Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well John, I am writing this letter to talk to you about the trip that you are undertaking for this summer vacation. I am surprised when I heard about this when your parents mentioned in a phone call.

Since the days of school, you used to be naive and not so motivated whenever we brought the topic of going on a school trip. So, this would be a huge step since you would experience the camping for a first time. The trip to Serengeti Forest would be wonderful this summer. You would be amazed to explore different sorts of animals. There would be lions roaming freely around the forest. You would be cruising around all the places in the forest in a Land rover with a armed guard beside you. It would be a lovely experience at the night time especially you would be sleeping in a tent with the shining moon above you.

You should be careful with the harmful insects biting you. Also, having food items in the open forest can be dangerous since it would attract wild animals.

I will be very pleased to join you for going on a camping this summer. I hope this trip will be a memorable one for years to come.

Warm Regards,

Harry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, identify potential disadvantages, and confirm your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the disadvantages are mentioned briefly without much elaboration. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how to mitigate those risks or provide more personal context regarding why you think your friend would enjoy the experience. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'Also', and 'However', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid to avoid a slightly repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'motivated', 'naive', and 'memorable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'experience the camping for a first time' (should be 'experience camping for the first time') and 'cruising around all the places' (which is slightly informal or imprecise in this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to talk to you about the trip that you are undertaking'. There are several grammatical errors, including 'I am surprised when I heard' (should be 'I was surprised when I heard') and 'a armed guard' (should be 'an armed guard'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as comma splices in the first paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will be beneficial.
