Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Dhara,
I hope you are doing well.
I am delighted to hear that you are planning to go comping next week. I am sure you will have an amazing time.
In my opinion, you will thoroughly enjoy this trip because spending time in the forest is both adventurous and relaxing. Camping is a wonderful way to escape the huddle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Don't forget to take your camera with you, as I know how passionate you are about photography. It will be a perfect opportunity to capture the breathtaking beauty of the forest.
However, there are a few things you should keep in mind before setting off. First, make sure you check the weather forecast and choose a day with pleasant weather, as heavy thunderstorms can make camping difficult, especially for a first-time camper. Second, be cautious at night because wild animals may wander near the campsite. Finally, avoid touching unfamiliar plants, as some of them may be poisonous and could cause serious health problems.
I was really excited when I received your letter because I hoped I could join you, unfortunately, my mother got sick since last few days and my father is currently abroad for a business trip. So I won't be able to come this time. I would love to join on your next camping trip.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
Best Regards,
Viral

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages, and politely declined the invitation while offering a future alternative. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and supported with specific examples, such as the mention of photography and safety precautions like checking the weather and avoiding poisonous plants. The response is well-structured and meets all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In my opinion', 'However', 'First', 'Second', and 'Finally', which help to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The transition between the advice and the personal update is smooth and natural, maintaining a consistent flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a friendly letter. Phrases like 'breathtaking beauty', 'pleasant weather', and 'passionate about photography' show a good command of language. There is a minor collocation error in the phrase 'escape the huddle and bustle', which should be 'hustle and bustle'. Additionally, 'comping' is a spelling error for 'camping'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and naturally. You use a range of descriptive language that enhances the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'my mother got sick since last few days', which would be more accurately phrased as 'has been sick for the last few days'. Another minor issue is the comma splice in the final paragraph: 'I would love to join on your next camping trip' is a separate thought that should be punctuated differently. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, showing a good level of control over grammar.
