Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Monika,

It was great to hear from you. I am so excited that you are planning to visit Mussoorie for the first time in this summer.

As I know how much you love to spend time in nature and it will be an opportunity for you to wake up with the birds chirping and sleeping in the camps. Moreover, you will get some time to stay away from screen and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Despite the stunning views, it can be difficult for you to leave the comfort of a bed and stay in the tents. Furthermore, you can also miss home cooked food as in camping everyone needs to cook food by themselves

I would also love to join you on this trip as my schedule is flexible this summer. Exploring together the breath-taking views of mountains will truly be hitting two birds with one stone. Let me know which weekend will suit you well so that we can plan accordingly.

Best regards,

Shubpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified relevant disadvantages such as the lack of comfort and the need to cook, and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by describing specific activities or the mental benefits of camping in more detail to fully develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use transition words like 'Moreover', 'Despite', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the benefits to the drawbacks and finally to the invitation. The referencing is clear, and the letter reads naturally. To improve, ensure that your cohesive devices are varied; while your current usage is effective, incorporating a wider range of linking phrases would enhance the flow even further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'stunning views', 'breath-taking', and 'flexible'. The use of the idiom 'hitting two birds with one stone' is a nice touch, although it is slightly misused here as it usually refers to achieving two goals with one action, whereas you are describing a shared experience. Your word choice is generally precise and appropriate for the informal context. To improve, focus on avoiding minor collocation errors, such as 'sleeping in the camps' (better: 'sleeping in a tent') and 'cook food by themselves' (better: 'prepare their own meals').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'in this summer' (should be 'this summer') and 'as I know how much you love to spend time' (should be 'As I know how much you love spending time'). Additionally, the sentence 'it will be an opportunity for you to wake up with the birds chirping and sleeping in the camps' lacks parallel structure. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing your control over verb forms and prepositions will help you achieve a higher score.
