Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I've heard that you are planning to go on a camping holiday this summer. Since this will be your first time, I'm happy to share important tips for your vacation.
Camping is a great way of holidaying, especially if you are in a group of people. It disconnects you from chaotic surroundings and offers the best way to relax if you are in a stressful job. You will enjoy more if you select a place where there is no internet as you don't have to check your phone frequently.
The only things you should be concerned about are the weather and wild animals. If there is a heavy rainfall, water may penetrate through your tent and make it difficult to sleep at night. Make sure to carry a bear spray and make noise while walking as they help in keeping the bears away.
I hope that these information will help you to prepare for your summer vacation. Unfortunately, I will not be able to join you this summer because I have a company workshop that will last for about a month. I hope you will enjoy your holiday.
Best,
Ken

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter effectively addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the benefits of camping, such as disconnecting from chaotic environments, and provide relevant disadvantages like weather issues and wildlife encounters. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The final point regarding your inability to join is also clearly stated. The response is well-developed, though the advice on bear safety is quite specific and could have been balanced with more general camping tips to provide a more comprehensive response. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits, the drawbacks, and your personal availability. Cohesive devices such as 'Since this will be', 'The only things', and 'Unfortunately' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The flow of ideas is natural and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, using phrases like 'chaotic surroundings', 'penetrate through your tent', and 'company workshop'. There is a minor error with 'these information', as 'information' is an uncountable noun and should be preceded by 'this'. However, this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally precise and fits the informal yet informative context of the letter well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There is a minor grammatical slip in the phrase 'these information', which should be 'this information'. Additionally, 'they help in keeping the bears away' is slightly awkward; 'it helps keep the bears away' would be more natural. Despite these minor issues, the control of grammar is strong, and the meaning is always clear.
