Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sara,

I am very excited to know that you are going for a camping holiday at Gorakh Hill-station. I can assure you it would be the best decision of your life. As you are going for camping for the first time in your life there are certain things you should consider. first of all, i would recommend you should take non perishable items with you, as you are camping in forest. there is also a chance of poisonous inscets that could bite you so remember keeping a first aid box as well. lastly take a torch and extra batteries as well because its very dark at night.

furthermore, possible mishaps can happen due to the weather condition at forest is unpredictable. Also, forest is very dark at night, usually predators hunt for their food so you should be very vigilant to not get out of your camp.

definitely, as you know i am on my semester break there is nothing much to do nowadays, so i would be delighted to go with you this summer. keep me updated about it so i can pack my luggage accordingly.

best wishes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why your friend would enjoy the trip, identified potential risks like weather and predators, and confirmed your interest in joining. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy the holiday is quite brief and could be expanded with more personal or descriptive detail. Additionally, the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend, though the advice provided feels a bit like a list of warnings rather than a balanced discussion. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully developed with more supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'first of all', 'furthermore', and 'lastly' to link your points. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the use of punctuation is inconsistent, which occasionally disrupts the flow. For example, the start of sentences often lacks capital letters (e.g., 'first of all', 'furthermore', 'definitely'), and the paragraphing could be more effectively used to separate the advice from the personal invitation. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'non-perishable', 'vigilant', and 'mishaps'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'inscets' instead of 'insects', and some word choices could be more precise. For example, referring to a 'forest' repeatedly is a bit repetitive; using synonyms like 'woodland' or 'wilderness' would show more flexibility. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on accurate spelling and expanding your range of descriptive adjectives will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing capital letters at the start of sentences, inconsistent use of articles (e.g., 'as you are camping in forest'), and minor subject-verb agreement issues. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to basic sentence mechanics, such as capitalization and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater precision.
