Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear David,
How are you doing? I'm writing to give you a piece of advice that can be worthwhile for your camping trip this summer vacation. There are many activities that you are definitely going to enjoy, such as bungee jumping, which is your favourite adventure sport. You will also have an opportunity to explore the ancient buildings of Nalanda town. I know you have already read about those buildings in our social science subject during school. Therefore, you have tons of things to enjoy.
The weather can be unpredictable in Nalanda town, so try to check the weather forecast regularly. Additionally, try to keep some warm clothes, as they may be beneficial for you in case of a sudden change in the weather. Also, keep some snacks for your children and yourself so that you can eat them if you don't have anything to eat during difficult times.
I'm extremely sorry for not being able to join you, as I'm working on an important office project. I can't leave it in the middle because this project is quite essential for my future promotion. However, after your trip, I will come to see you.
Best of luck for your vacation, and take care!
Cheers!
Arvind

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy the trip, mention potential disadvantages (weather and food), and clarify your inability to join. However, the task asks for advice on a 'camping holiday,' but your response focuses on visiting a town and exploring buildings, which sounds more like a city break than a camping trip. To improve, ensure your ideas are more closely aligned with the specific context of camping, such as mentioning tents, sleeping bags, or outdoor cooking, rather than general tourism activities like visiting ancient buildings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific bullet point, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Therefore,' and 'However' to link your sentences. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is slightly more natural. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'unpredictable weather' and 'worthwhile' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places (e.g., 'enjoy' is used multiple times). To improve, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive language related to the topic of camping. For example, instead of 'tons of things,' you could use 'a wealth of activities.' The word choice is generally appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a friend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor issues, such as 'I'm writing to give you a piece of advice that can be worthwhile,' which sounds slightly unnatural; 'some advice that might be useful' would be better. You also use 'in the middle' when 'halfway through' would be more idiomatic. Overall, your grammar is strong enough to communicate your points without any confusion.
