Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Harry,
I hope you are doing well! I'm happy to help you with your first summer camping trip. I know you might be feeling nervous and excited at the same time but trust me it's always fun to do camping and connect with nature.
Firstly, I remember from the school days, you were the most excited person for school trips, no matter where it would be from the amusement park to trailing to a religious place. I have enjoyed with you on every visits. I am sure you will love camping holidays with same energy as we did as kids. However, there are few problems associated with such trips and would like to inform you beforehand. Major one is staying in nature brings the risk of encounters with wild animals, which could be hazardous to life.
If you are worried about camping, I can join you for your first trip to guide and help. Let me know what are your thoughts on this idea?
Kind regards,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified a disadvantage (wild animals), and offered to join the trip. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the disadvantage regarding wild animals is quite brief and could have been expanded with more detail or a more balanced perspective to better meet the 'fully developed' criteria of higher bands. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'If'. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the mention of school trips and the disadvantages of camping feels a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used, but the structure could be improved by separating the advice and the offer to join into distinct, well-developed paragraphs to enhance the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'hazardous', 'encounters', and 'nervous'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'trailing to a religious place' (which is not standard usage) and 'on every visits' (grammatical error affecting lexical accuracy). To reach a higher band, you should aim for more natural collocations and a slightly wider range of descriptive language to convey your points with more precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'do camping' (should be 'go camping'), 'on every visits' (should be 'on every visit'), and 'what are your thoughts' (should be 'what your thoughts are' in an indirect question). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
