Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Friend,

I hope you are in the best of your health. I am doing great, hale and hearty! I received your letter and I feel it's a fantastic idea that go for camping this summer. I am very excited and just after reading you last letter, I told my family right away. They are equally enthusiastic and we are all looking forward to it.

It's an amazing idea to camp by the river and fishing will add the extra zeal to it. I can't wait to be there and enjoy the barbeques on the riverside. I have collected some more information about the area. There is a wildlife sanctuary nearby where we can hike along with our family and we can see a variety of animals in that region. The only problem we can face in the area is the wolves, and for that we'll have to put a bonfire by the campsite.

I am eagerly waiting for 2nd June so that we can all set out for the summer holidays right away. I sometimes wonder whether the kids are more excited or me! Ha ha ha! Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Zoya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified a disadvantage (the presence of wolves), and confirmed your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the mention of wolves is quite dramatic and could have been balanced with more common camping disadvantages, such as unpredictable weather or lack of facilities, to provide a more realistic perspective. Additionally, the transition between your excitement and the practical details is a bit abrupt. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but further elaboration on the 'why' and 'how' would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Additionally' or 'However' (though these could be used more frequently to improve flow). Some transitions are a bit mechanical, such as 'I have collected some more information'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the wildlife sanctuary and the danger of wolves could be smoother. Overall, the text is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is logical throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'hale and hearty', 'enthusiastic', and 'wildlife sanctuary'. These choices are appropriate for the informal context of the letter. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'it's a fantastic idea that go for camping' (should be 'to go camping') and 'put a bonfire' (should be 'build' or 'light' a bonfire). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and naturally to your friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I sometimes wonder whether the kids are more excited or me!' and 'There is a wildlife sanctuary nearby where we can hike'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are in the best of your health' (idiomatically, 'in the best of health') and 'after reading you last letter' (should be 'your'), these do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety helps maintain the reader's interest. More consistent proofreading would help eliminate these minor slips.
