Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kofi,

I hope you’re doing well.Yesterday,I received a mail from you saying you’d be going for a summer camp. You also mentioned that, this would be you’re first time embarking on such journey.

To begin with,I heard Nova Scotia is a beautiful place. It has a great scenery view and hospitable resident.Summer camps are very important.During such moments, you get to meet new people and learn more about the campsite.Educative trips such as this ,is very helpful and beneficial to students.I had I the opportunity to attend on a few before I graduated. You are definitively going to enjoy this trip.

However, there are few downsides to camping holidays.Mostly, students are encouraged to mount tents outside to serve as shelter instead or book a hotel or apartments. This is not a bad idea though but can be dangerous since reptiles and insects can easily crawl into your tent. This is not to scare you but to serve as a form of precaution.

To conclude with,I would have loved to go for camping with you since it’s your first time.Unfortunately,I will not be able to since I am currently helping my sister plan her wedding.Have fun and let me know when you get back.

Kind regards,

Ella

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and stating your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the section on disadvantages focuses heavily on the danger of insects and reptiles, which feels a bit specific and slightly repetitive. To improve, ensure that your ideas are more balanced and fully explored. You have maintained a clear position throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is evident from the start.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'To conclude with', to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical errors in punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'well.Yesterday,I'). Improving the consistency of your paragraphing and ensuring that your cohesive devices are used more naturally will help you achieve a higher band. The referencing is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'hospitable', 'precaution', and 'embarking'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'great scenery view' is not a natural collocation; 'scenic views' or 'beautiful scenery' would be better. Additionally, 'attend on a few' is incorrect; you should say 'attend a few'. While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over word choice to reach a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar. Specifically, there are several instances of missing spaces after punctuation marks, and errors such as 'you’re first time' (should be 'your') and 'Educative trips such as this ,is' (subject-verb agreement error). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and punctuation conventions, as these small slips currently limit your score.
