Student answer (Band 6.0)

DEAR GURWINDER ,

I am writing this letter as i got to know that you are going for camping this summers . it will be a trip of your life . i just want to share my experience of camping with you. camping involves tracking as well so it will be a fun for you

However , there are some demerits of camping as sometimes insects may disturb you while sleeping . Not only this , weather is the other factor as rain can ruin your shelters . Most importantly , there will be always a risk of wild animals as in the past many incidents have happened .

my brother i will not be able to join you on this holiday as i need to take care of my grandfather . on the contrary i can assure our next trip will be together

Best wishes ,

Rahul

Lexical Resource6.0
Grammatical Range and Accuracy5.5
Overall6.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and declining the invitation. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the development of ideas. The points are mentioned but lack sufficient detail or elaboration to fully satisfy the task requirements. For instance, the explanation of why the friend would enjoy it is very brief. To improve, you should expand on your points with more descriptive language and personal anecdotes to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Not only this', and 'on the contrary', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'on the contrary' used to introduce a future plan. The overall structure is clear, but the progression of ideas could be smoother with more varied linking words. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence to guide the reader through your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is somewhat basic. You use words like 'demerits', 'ruin', and 'incidents', which are relevant, but there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the letter. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'tracking' (likely meaning 'trekking') and 'shelters' (referring to tents). Expanding your range of collocations and using more descriptive adjectives would help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including capitalization issues ('i', 'summers'), missing articles, and punctuation errors. For example, 'i got to know that you are going for camping' should be 'I heard that you are going camping'. The sentence structure is mostly simple, with limited use of complex sentences. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors—particularly with basic punctuation and capitalization—prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammar and sentence variety will significantly improve your writing.
