Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sam,
Hi, how're you? I received your letter yesterday, I happy that you want to take advice from me regarding camping holiday.
It is your good decision that you want to go for camping holiday in this summer. I would suggest you Banff is a very beautiful place for camping and you would enjoy several things there such as lakes, beaches, and mountains. Also, you can explore some popular restaurants and try adventures.
There are two main demerits in Banff. You need to winter clothes because sometimes the weather is very harsh and need to wear jackets and snow shoes. Another is that it takes three hours to reach there and you need to carry some snacks as well as food from home.
I would like to go with you because now I am on vacations and like to spend time with you. Moreover, we would explore new outdoor activities there and different food together. I really want to spend my holidays with you.
I hope you would like my suggestions and place that I suggest it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when mentioning the disadvantages, you could have elaborated more on the 'harsh weather' or the inconvenience of the travel time to provide a more comprehensive response. While the task requirements are met, the depth of the content could be improved to reach a higher band by providing more descriptive detail and personal context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Another', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the connection between ideas could be more sophisticated. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. You use some relevant topic-specific words like 'adventures', 'demerits', and 'outdoor activities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I happy that' (should be 'I am happy that') and 'You need to winter clothes' (should be 'You need to pack winter clothes'). To improve, try to use more precise adjectives and natural collocations. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as missing verbs ('I happy that'), incorrect prepositions ('go for camping'), and missing articles ('in this summer'). There are also issues with sentence construction, such as 'You need to winter clothes' and 'place that I suggest it'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of basic sentence structure and verb forms.
