Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear friend,

I hope you are doing well. I am glad to give an advice to you for the first camping in this summer. In recent years, I have gained a massive experience in camping . I want to recommend you to plan a camping at Pembina valley provincial park as this place would be good for you as a beginner. I am sure that you are going to enjoy your first ever camping experience because this camp site has a scenic view that includes mountains, big trees, sunset and sunrise spots and it is in the middle of the park from where you can gaze at the sky.

Furthermore, there are some negative effects of the given camp site and the first and foremost is no cellular network is available that hinders emergency calls and texts. Moreover, many wild animals are found in this camping site. Consequently, if you planning to go at this site then be prepared with the products like beer spray and a long knife for personal safety to avoid any uncertainty.

Additionally, I was planning to go for a camping in this summer with my brother. However, he has some other plans and I would like to join you in this journey and I will bring my extra camping boots for you this helps you to save money. I hope you are going to enjoy this camping with me.

Best wishes,

Harpi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified specific disadvantages (lack of network and wildlife), and clearly stated your intention to join them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure your advice is more nuanced; for instance, suggesting 'bear spray' instead of 'beer spray' would demonstrate better task awareness, as the current suggestion is slightly confusing or humorous in a way that might distract from the serious nature of safety advice. Overall, the ideas are relevant and well-developed for a General Training Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use transition signals such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' to connect your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For example, 'Consequently' is used to introduce safety advice, but it does not follow logically from the previous sentence about wild animals in a way that feels natural. Improving the flow between sentences would help the text read more smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'scenic view', 'hinders', and 'uncertainty'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'gained a massive experience' is unnatural; 'gained a lot of experience' or 'have extensive experience' would be better. Additionally, 'beer spray' is likely a typo for 'bear spray', which is a significant lexical error in the context of safety. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of natural collocations will improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'give an advice' (advice is uncountable), 'first camping' (should be 'first camping trip'), and 'if you planning to go' (missing auxiliary 'are'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The sentence structure is generally clear, but more variety in complex sentence forms would be beneficial to demonstrate better control over grammar.
