Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Deborah,
How are you? Hope you are doing well! I am writing to give you some advice on your camping holiday. I believe you would enjoy this summer because there are a lot of fun activities in the camp, such as swimming, karaoke, dancing competition, archery and horse riding.
There are some disadvantages which could be handled professionally. Hiking is among the activities to be carried out on the camp however because you had a surgery 2 months ago, i believe it would be a hindrance to you. In addition, swimming would be cancelled so as you would not tear your stitches.
Furthermore, I would like your consent in order for me to join you in your camping holiday, we would have a lot of fun. We could join the dancing group, I remembered you were quite a great dancer during our university days and we opened a social media back then to post our videos.
I look forward to receiving your response.
Best wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the task. First, the writer explains why the friend would enjoy a camping holiday by mentioning fun activities such as swimming, karaoke, dancing, archery, and horse riding. Second, some possible disadvantages are described, specifically noting a hiking restriction and swimming modifications due to a recent surgery. Third, the writer clearly states a desire to join the friend this summer. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and all ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed. The response meets all the task requirements efficiently, demonstrating a clear understanding of General Training correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped appropriately into paragraphs, starting with a friendly greeting and the main purpose, moving into activities and disadvantages, and concluding with a proposal to join the trip and a sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'such as', 'however', and 'in addition' are used reasonably well, though some transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is mostly functional, although paragraph two is slightly dense given the contrasting ideas of activities, surgical restrictions, and swimming precautions. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a friendly letter, including terms like 'professionally', 'hindrance', 'consent', and 'university days'. While much of the vocabulary is standard and functional, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'activities to be carried out on the camp' instead of 'at the camp', and 'dancing competition' (which shifts into plural 'dancing group' later). Spelling is accurate, and the vocabulary choice is sufficient to convey the intended message without impeding communication, though it lacks the flexibility and precision of a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as the comma splice in '...join you in your camping holiday, we would have a lot of fun' and missing capitalization in 'i believe'. Furthermore, the phrase 'so as you would not tear your stitches' is awkward and grammatically strained. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are clear and correct. A tighter control over punctuation and complex sentence joining would elevate this score.
