Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I am overjoyed to hear that you have finally decided to go out for a camping holiday and I hope it would be a wonderful and unforgettable experience for you.

Personally, I think you will thoroughly enjoy this outing as you have hand picked the destination yourself. Kelowna is undoubtedly is one of the best places for hiking and treking. Lush green environment and breeze of fresh air in the valleys make this place heaven. Also, there are several camp sites present on the top of the mountain range which offer paragliding.

The only distanadvantage I can think of is the danger poses by wild animals. During the summer, grizzly bears are known to be hyperactive in these areas as they just wake up from a year long hybernation. They become quite aggresive and humans are very easy prey for them to catch.

I would love to join you in this plan as I have visited this place several times and is one of the favourite as well.

I hope you would find my advise useful and I am waiting for your reply.

Love,

Vishavjeet singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You begin by explaining why John would enjoy a camping holiday in Kelowna, citing the lush green environment and paragliding opportunities. You then describe a clear disadvantage, namely the danger posed by grizzly bears waking from hibernation. Finally, you explicitly state your willingness to join him by writing, "I would love to join you in this plan." The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, suitable for a letter to a friend. The purpose of the letter is clearly conveyed, and all key requirements are addressed satisfactorily, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical paragraph structure, moving from a warm opening to the reasons for enjoyment, potential drawbacks, and finally your offer to join. Each paragraph has a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as "Also" and "The only disadvantage". However, paragraphing could be slightly refined, and some transitional links are a bit basic. Referencing is generally clear, though expressions like "is one of the favourite as well" lack a clear subject pronoun, causing a minor cohesive hiccup. Overall, the organization is clear and progression is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general letter, attempting some less common phrases like "hyperactive," "unforgettable experience," and "hand picked." However, there are several spelling and word choice errors, such as "treking" (trekking), "distanadvantage" (disadvantage), "poses" (posed), "hybernation" (hibernation), and "aggresive" (aggressive). Furthermore, the phrase "breeze of fresh air" is an unnatural collocation compared to "breath of fresh air." While these lexical errors are noticeable and detract slightly from precision, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to convey your meaning effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively (e.g., "as you have hand picked the destination yourself"). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present. For instance, "Kelowna is undoubtedly is one of the best places" contains a double verb error, and "as I have visited this place several times and is one of the favourite as well" misses the subject pronoun before "is." Additionally, "I hope you would find my advise useful" should use the noun "advice" rather than the verb "advise." Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, placing your performance firmly in the band 6 category.
