Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Maria,

I hope this letter finds you well. How's it going? Anyway I'm writing to share some experience about the camping you've asked for. Camping is honestly the best adventure to explore the nature.

Let me explain you in detail. As you are going for camping frist time, to Bali this summer there are few things I would love to highlight. During the time of camping it is possible that you may see a wide range of birds and animals that is usually not seen in our country areas, which is the most intresting part of camping. It is more likely that these animals are friendly and playful. Apart from that you will also discover few water falls which is absolutely beautiful to experience it.

It is also possible that sometimes weather can be appropriate, so in order to survive the weather conditions I'd suggest you to keep extra clothing for rainy and cold waethers. In addition, I'm also planning to go camping with you this summer because I assume that my university is planning to give a short summer break. I hope I can explore this amazing camping with you soon. I will definately acknowledge you for further details.

Yours friend

Sara Jafar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt: it explains why Maria would enjoy camping by mentioning animals and waterfalls, describes possible disadvantages such as unpredictable weather conditions, and confirms the writer's intention to join her this summer. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, starting with 'Dear Maria,' and ending with an appropriate sign-off. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or vague, such as the mention of Bali as a camping destination, which lacks specific context. Despite this, all task requirements are addressed clearly, and the format meets the expectations of a General Training Task 1 response, placing it firmly at the Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from introduction to explaining benefits, disadvantages, and future plans. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct ideas, such as the advantages in the second paragraph and the disadvantages and plans in the third. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Anyway I'm writing' is rather abrupt, and referencing is at times unclear, as seen in phrases like 'share some experience about the camping you've asked for'. Furthermore, cohesive devices are somewhat basic. These limitations reflect the characteristics of Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'adventure to explore the nature', 'wide range of birds and animals', and 'survive the weather conditions'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'experience about the camping', spelling errors like 'frist' instead of 'first', 'intresting' instead of 'interesting', 'waethers' instead of 'weathers', and 'definately' instead of 'definitely'. Additionally, 'acknowledge you' is used incorrectly in place of 'let you know'. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary squarely in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'As you are going for camping frist time, to Bali this summer there are few things I would love to highlight.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward preposition usages throughout the text, including 'going for camping', 'explain you in detail', 'weather can be appropriate' (when inappropriate weather was likely meant), and missing articles or punctuation. Although these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message without major difficulty. This performance aligns with the Band 6 descriptor for grammar.
