Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anu,
I hope that you and your family are doing great. I'm over the moon after hearing that you are finally planning to go on a camping holiday this summer.
I really think that you will have a great time there because of two main reasons. Firstly, as this is going to be your first-hand experience to enjoy those scenic views. I think you will be amazed after gazing at views. Secondly, you are going there with your friends, which will be a great kick to increase your excitement significantly.
However, there are a few drawbacks of camping. It might be a little bit expensive as you are required to purchase necessary stuff such as a comfortable pair of shoes and a tent for your stay. Moreover, I would suggest you to carry some antibiotics with you because there will be multiple bugs or insects to get bitten by.
Surprisingly, I am also planning to go on a camping during the same time with my friends. There are high possibilities that we will be going to the same place. It would be so much fun if we could go together.
I hope to see you soon and good luck for your first camping holiday.
Warm regards,
Gurkirat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student covers all requirements of the prompt well. First, the writer explains why the friend would enjoy a camping holiday, pointing out the scenic views and the social aspect of going with friends. Second, some possible disadvantages are described, such as the potential expense of purchasing equipment and the presence of insects. Finally, the student clearly states their intention and desire to join the friend on the camping trip this summer. The tone is appropriately friendly and informal for a general letter. Ideas are well-developed and all bullet points are addressed effectively, leading to a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter has a clear logical organization with an appropriate greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different aspects of the letter, such as the reasons for enjoying camping, the disadvantages, and the final proposition to join. Cohesive devices are used adequately with markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the transitions and referencing feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the phrase 'I think you will be amazed' repeating the structure of preceding sentences. Overall, progression is clear and the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal letter. Phrases such as 'over the moon', 'scenic views', and 'significant excitement' show a reasonable command of English. However, there are some awkward collocations and slight lexical inaccuracies, such as 'first-hand experience to enjoy' instead of 'first experience of enjoying', 'great kick to increase your excitement', and 'multiple bugs or insects to get bitten by'. Despite these minor limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional-like constructs ('as this is going to be', 'It might be a little bit expensive as you are required...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'first-hand experience to enjoy those scenic views' which lacks a main verb clause, and 'go on a camping' missing the noun 'trip'. Punctuation is generally fine, and these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is consistent with a band 6.0 performance.
