Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sam,
I just wanted to write to you about your first camping holiday this summer. The main reason for writing is to give you some advice about camping and tell you whether I would like to join you.
To begin with, I believe that you would really enjoy camping because you love spending time outdoors and exploring new places. I think it would be a great opportunity for you to relax, enjoy nature and take a break from your normal routine.
Furthermore, unfortunately, camping can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially when the weather is bad, and you may also have limited access to showers and other facilities. It is therefore important to take suitable clothes and all the necessary equipment.
Finally, I would be happy to go camping with you this summer so that we can enjoy the experience together. We could choose a beautiful campsite and plan some outdoor activities while we are there.
Thanks again for taking the time to read my letter. I hope you find this information helpful, and it would be great to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a natural and appropriate tone for a General Training letter. First, you explain why your friend would enjoy a camping holiday by noting that 'you love spending time outdoors and exploring new places.' Second, you describe potential disadvantages, pointing out that 'camping can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially when the weather is bad.' Third, you clearly state your willingness to join your friend by writing, 'I would be happy to go camping with you this summer.' The purpose of the letter is consistently clear and the tone is friendly and helpful. All parts of the task are well-developed and addressed fully, earning a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
Your letter is well-organized with a clear, logical progression of ideas from beginning to end. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different points, such as the reasons for enjoying camping in the second paragraph and the disadvantages in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used naturally to guide the reader through the text, for instance, 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Finally.' Paragraph transitions and referencing are handled smoothly, ensuring the text is easy to follow and cohesive throughout. The structure fits the standard conventions of personal correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a personal letter. Expressions such as 'take a break from your normal routine,' 'limited access to showers,' and 'outdoor activities' show good control of common collocations. Although you rely mostly on standard vocabulary rather than highly sophisticated or uncommon lexical items, your word choice is precise and appropriate for the context. There are no spelling or word-choice errors, allowing the message to be communicated clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your letter exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully incorporate relative and subordinate clauses, such as 'especially when the weather is bad' and 'so that we can enjoy the experience together.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating sound control of verb tenses, modal verbs, and punctuation. While the range of grammar is somewhat standard rather than truly adventurous, your structural control is consistent and communication is never impeded. The tone and grammatical forms are fully appropriate for a friendly letter.
