Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing well. I just received your letter seeking my advice for the camping holiday that you are going to have this Summer. As this is your first camping, you will enjoy it a lot. This will be a totally new experience for you. Additionally the time that you have choose for camping is the perfect time. This season has the best weather for camping as it is not that cold and not that hot.
However, you will have a drawback of mosquitos and insects. During this time of summer pest activity increase in the woods. I would suggest you to carry some mosquito replent cream and if possible buy some hanging tent or bed rather sleeping on the ground. Moreover, I remeber I saw a snake near my tent when I went camping last year in Summers.
I would love to join you in your holidays. This would give us good time to spend together and make beautiful memories. Let me know when is your vacation starting so we can plan accordingly.
Your best friend
Geroge.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt in a natural and friendly tone. First, the writer explains why the friend would enjoy a camping holiday, highlighting the new experience and the ideal summer weather. Second, the potential disadvantages are described, notably insects, mosquitoes, and the risk of wildlife encounters like snakes, complete with practical recommendations such as carrying repellent cream. Finally, the writer clearly states their enthusiasm to join the camping trip this summer and suggests coordinating plans. All parts are well-developed and appropriate for a General Training Task 1 letter. The tone is consistently informal and polite, fitting the prompt's scenario. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled without any major omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from opening pleasantries to giving reasons, outlining disadvantages, expressing willingness to join, and concluding with a call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the introduction, the pros and cons of camping, and the invitation to join. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Moreover' are utilised to connect ideas, although referencing is occasionally slightly loose. The overall structure flows smoothly, making it easy for the reader to follow the train of thought from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal letter. Phrases like 'totally new experience', 'pest activity increase', and 'make beautiful memories' convey the message effectively. However, there are a few lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'camping' used as a noun instead of 'camping trip', 'choose' instead of 'chose', 'mosquito replent cream' (spelling and collocation), and 'rather sleeping' instead of 'rather than sleeping'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Structures like 'As this is your first camping, you will enjoy it a lot' and 'This would give us good time to spend together' are clear and understandable. However, several grammatical errors are present, including tense consistency ('you have choose'), missing articles ('good time'), and prepositional issues. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication, placing the writing comfortably within the Band 6 territory.
