Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Chris,

I hope you are doing well and this letter finds you in high spirit and health. I am writing to give you some useful advices for your camping.

Firstly, camping is really intersting thing to do in holidays and this is your first time and I think you defenatly enjoy it because you always like to do these kinds of things. Moreover, you are nature lover person, so this is best way to spend time to see eye catching views of nature as well as you love to click numerous photographs, so I advice you to keep your personal camera with you while camping.

Apart from this, I want to awer you from some disadvantages, like there are no network on camping sites, so make sure talk to your parents before entering there. Furthermore, there are rare chance to having food court nearby, so make sure to pack enough food for your camping.

I realy want to go with you on this camping, but unforunitly I have one company meeting to attend at that time, so I don't make time for it, but maybe next time we are going together.

I hope you enjoy your trip.

Yours loving,

Rupinder Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend Chris would enjoy camping, pointing out his love for nature and photography. You also describe potential disadvantages, such as the lack of mobile network coverage and food courts nearby. Finally, you successfully address whether you can join him by declining due to a company meeting and suggesting a future trip. The tone is suitably informal and friendly, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. All requirements of the task have been met effectively, showing good development of ideas and a clear communicative purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear logical organisation with an appropriate informal greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different points, such as the advantages, disadvantages, and your availability. Cohesive devices are employed to connect your ideas, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Apart from this', and 'Furthermore'. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional minor slips in logical flow prevent this from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structure ensures the reader can easily follow your advice and explanations from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task, using phrases like 'eye catching views' and 'nature lover person'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'intersting' instead of interesting, 'defenatly' instead of definitely, 'advices' (advice is uncountable), and 'awer' instead of warn. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation occur. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score to this band level because more precision and accurate spelling are expected for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. You successfully use clauses linked with conjunctions and relative ideas, such as 'I am writing to give you some useful advice' and 'I want to warn you from some disadvantages'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues and preposition errors ('warn you from' instead of warn you about, 'there are rare chance' instead of there is a rare chance, 'don't make time' instead of couldn't make time). These errors require some effort to decode at times, placing the grammar at this level.
