Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Harsh,

I got your letter and happy to hear about your achievement in the school. It's been a long time since we haven't met. You were asking me about a camping holiday whether you should go or not in your letter. I think you should go and enjoy your first time experience.

I am sure that you will definitely enjoy a camping holiday because you will be able to make new friends there. You will expose to new outdoor activities and games as you really like the challanges. You will be able to live in a tent for the first time. You will be able to experience something that you wont be able to forget.

There are some disadvantages too like you will not be able to get all facilities like sleeping on a bed or a proper kitchen. Also, you are going in the summer so outdoor activities might be difficult for you. Additionally, mosqutioes, bugs and other insects become more active in high temperature so you have to be careful.

If I get a chance to go camping then i would definitely love this because you cannot get such opportunities regularly. Eventhough, there are some challanges there i think it is the way we can learn how to survive with less facilities.

Please let me know if you need more information about packing. i am looking forward to hearing from you soon whether you are going or not.

Yours sincerely,

Kruti Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student covers all bullet points of the prompt effectively. The letter begins with appropriate social pleasantries and directly addresses the friend about a camping holiday. The first bullet point is handled well by explaining why the friend would enjoy it, mentioning making new friends, experiencing outdoor activities, and living in a tent. The second bullet point is addressed by describing disadvantages such as the lack of facilities like a proper bed or kitchen, summer heat, and insects. The third bullet point is also covered by stating whether the writer would like to go camping together. Ideas are clear and well-developed, with a consistent friendly tone suitable for a General Training letter. All aspects of the task are appropriately highlighted, resulting in a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, maintaining an appropriate epistolary format from 'Dear Harsh' to the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different points, such as the introduction, benefits, disadvantages, personal willingness to join, and concluding remarks. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, with transitions like 'Also,' 'Additionally,' and 'Eventhough' helping to connect ideas, although some linking words are slightly mechanical or contain minor punctuation issues. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the writer's thoughts easily without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal experiences and opinions. Words and phrases such as 'achievement,' 'outdoor activities,' 'facilities,' and 'survive' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor vocabulary inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'You will expose to' instead of 'You will be exposed to,' and spelling errors like 'challanges' instead of 'challenges' and 'mosqutioes' instead of 'mosquitoes.' While less common vocabulary is attempted, these occasional slips and spelling mistakes prevent the response from reaching a higher band, though they do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures ('If I get a chance to go camping then i would definitely love this') and relative clauses. There is good control over many basic sentence patterns, but several grammatical errors persist throughout the text. Examples include 'I got your letter and happy to hear' (missing subject 'am'), 'since we haven't met' (incorrect use of negative aspect), and punctuation errors like lowercase 'i' instead of 'I'. There are also minor preposition and article inaccuracies. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, reflecting a solid band 6 performance.
