Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Kamal,

I hope you are doing well. I was so glad after meeting your parents last Sunday; however, I am writing this letter to suggest camping to you and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.

In my opinion, you would love camping as you are fond of nature, and it will give you some relief after your final term exam. Camping has lots of pros, such as you could experience nature closely. Moreover, you can learn how to cook and live without modern amenities. In addition to this, last summer, I went camping with my family and we bought a camping tent from Walmart, let me know if you would need that. It was of a great help, as we slept in it without the disruption of mosquitoes.

There are some disadvantages of camping as well, such as you have to carry lots of water if your site is far from river or lakes. Other than this, you have to keep in mind about the local animals who might look at you as hunter and danger. Therefore, have a proper search of the area and be prepare to spend time without technology and electricity.

I might like to come, but I already have office commitment for the days you are suggesting. However, if I get a day off or two, I would definitely love to come.

Warm Regards,

Roop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt. First, you explained why your friend would enjoy camping by mentioning his fondness for nature and the need for relief after exams. Second, you described possible disadvantages, such as carrying water and dealing with local wildlife. Third, you clearly stated your position regarding going camping with him this summer, citing office commitments while leaving open the possibility of a day off. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout the letter, opening with the required greeting. All bullet points are well-covered with relevant supporting details, demonstrating a clear understanding of General Training Task 1 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphs are used appropriately to divide the introduction, the advantages, the disadvantages, and the final response regarding joining the trip. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to this', 'Therefore', and 'However'. While referencing is mostly clear, a minor slip occurs with 'who might look at you as hunter and danger', but it does not disrupt the general flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, making this a solid performance for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a friend. You successfully attempted some less common phrases like 'modern amenities', 'disruption of mosquitoes', and 'office commitment'. There are a few lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'have a proper search of the area' instead of 'thoroughly check the area' or 'research the area', and 'danger' instead of 'dangerous'. However, these minor errors do not impede communication. Spelling and word choice are generally sound, reflecting a functional command of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully deployed conditional structures, modal verbs, and relative clauses, such as 'if your site is far from river or lakes' and 'who might look at you as'. There are some grammatical errors, notably missing articles ('far from river or lakes' should be 'far from a river or lakes', 'be prepare' should be 'be prepared'), and minor preposition slips. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede the overall comprehensibility of the message, showing good control over basic and intermediate structures.
