Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I hope you are doing well. I was delighted to hear from you that you have planned to go on a camping holiday this summer, it's a brilliant idea to spend summer vacation.

As you are going camping for the first time i would like to suggest some important things to you, for example, you must keep an umbrella with you because the weather in the north is absolutely unpredictable, and also carry long boots along with jackets, which would help you to move around easily.

In addition to that, I also inform you that you must bring a map with you because there are some chances of getting lost at camping sites at night, as network signals are also weak in this area. That's why you may hardly get in touch with the rest of the family and have to help yourself in difficult situations.

I would love to join you in that camping adventure if i would get a chance, but i have to attend a cousin's wedding in the same dates. But i will try my best to join you, if it is possible, then it will become a memorable trip for both of us.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. First, the writer explains why the friend would enjoy camping by framing it as a 'brilliant idea to spend summer vacation' and offering practical preparations. Second, disadvantages are clearly described, specifically highlighting the unpredictable weather in the north, the potential of getting lost at night, weak network signals, and the difficulty of staying in touch with family. Third, the student explicitly mentions whether they would like to go camping together, noting a conflict with a cousin's wedding but expressing a desire to join if possible. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend. Ideas are relevant and developed well, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical organization. It opens with an appropriate salutation and a friendly greeting. The student uses cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'As you are going camping', 'In addition to that', and 'That's why' to link ideas together, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used, separating the introduction, advice, disadvantages, and the final response about joining the trip. However, the second and third paragraphs are quite long and could be broken down further to improve readability. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional run-on sentences slightly disrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for an informal letter. The student successfully incorporates some less common functional phrases and vocabulary such as 'unpredictable', 'network signals', and 'memorable trip'. However, there are some imprecise word choices and minor collocation issues, such as saying 'at camping sites' instead of 'while camping' or 'at the campsite', and 'in the same dates' instead of 'on the same dates'. Spelling is mostly accurate, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations. The range is sufficient for the task requirements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals and subordinate clauses like 'if i would get a chance' and 'because there are some chances of getting lost'. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with tense consistency and modal usage, such as 'i would like to suggest' followed by comma splices in '...camping for the first time i would like to...', and the incorrect conditional structure 'if i would get a chance, but i have to attend'. Punctuation is occasionally weak, notably with run-on sentences joined by commas instead of full stops. Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are understandable and communication flows smoothly without significant breakdown.
