Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mital,

Hopefully, you and your husband are doing well. My apologies for not being in touch, but I am making it up via letter; at least I hope so.

I am so happy to hear that you are going for the summer campaign this year. I think it is the best time to go out in nature and explore beauty, as well as get a break from busy life. Additionally, you will enjoy numerous outdoor endeavours, such as cooking outdoors, hiking, and spending time with deer. Hopefully, your first campaign will become memorable.

Despite having fun outdoors, there are several disadvantages too. To start with, you can not predict the weather conditions; sometimes heavy rain makes your whole memory worse than you actually think. Secondly, you have to deal with unnecessary situations, such as insects, sleeping in a tent, and limited bathroom facilities.

I would definitely like to join you at your summer camp, as we have not met each other for ages. It would be more joyful if we could go together, so I can help you set up the tent and prepare meals.

Let me know the date and time for your upcoming campaign, so I will be available for that. Do get back to me whenever you get a chance.

Kind regards,

KEvin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a friendly, semi-formal tone appropriate for a letter to a friend. The first bullet is addressed by explaining the benefits of nature and outdoor endeavours like cooking outdoors and hiking. The second bullet outlines disadvantages such as unpredictable weather conditions, insects, and limited bathroom facilities. The third bullet is clearly answered with an enthusiastic offer to join the camping trip together. The format and purpose of the letter are fully realised, and ideas are well developed with relevant supporting details. Overall, the response meets all the requirements of Task Achievement at a solid band 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening greetings and congratulations on the camping trip to the advantages, disadvantages, and finally the invitation to join. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Despite having fun outdoors', 'To start with', and 'Secondly' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text, although some connectors like 'campaign' instead of 'camping' reflect lexical rather than cohesive lapses. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. Coherence and Cohesion easily satisfies the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student has a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'unpredictable weather conditions' and 'outdoor endeavours'. However, there is a recurring lexical error throughout the response: the student consistently uses the word 'campaign' instead of 'camping' ('summer campaign', 'first campaign', 'upcoming campaign'). Furthermore, phrases like 'busy life' lack the appropriate article ('a busy life'), and 'make your whole memory worse' is an unnatural collocation. Despite these occasional slips and the persistent vocabulary confusion between campaign and camping, the range is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, placing it securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and prepositional phrases effectively (e.g., 'It would be more joyful if we could go together, so I can help you...'). There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'I am making it up via letter' and omitting articles ('busy life'). Additionally, punctuation is generally sound, though occasional slips occur. The errors do not impede communication at any point, and there are frequent error-free sentences, representing a standard typical of Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.
