Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hello Simmi,

I hope you doing well. I came to know that you are planning to go for camping this summar. It would be a great opportunity to escape from your daily routine and reconnect to the nature. Not only you can see peaceful surrodings, but also you can participate in some outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming, fishing and experience of cooking outside.

However, there are some demerits as well. First of all, there are some safety concern in unfamiliar places, For example bear or other forest animals. Another reason is unpredictable weather conditions and you might have face some discomfort. Apart from this, there can be insects and you will probably feel difficulty in sleeping. Therefore do not forget to bring insects repellent.

Yes, I would love to join you in this summar. It will be a great opportunity to spend quality time together and make some memories. I would sugeest you to book a campsite in advance and let me know the details as well.

write me back and see you soon'

best wishes,

Sukhveer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a friendly and appropriate letter format. You clearly explained why Simmi would enjoy camping, mentioning benefits such as escaping daily routine, enjoying peaceful surroundings, and participating in outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. You also described possible disadvantages, including safety concerns regarding wild animals, unpredictable weather, and sleep discomfort. Finally, you explicitly confirmed your desire to join her this summer and offered a helpful suggestion to book a campsite in advance. The tone is well-suited for a friend, and the bullet points from the prompt are fully addressed. Band score: 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall structure, opening with an appropriate greeting ('Hello Simmi,') and closing with a warm sign-off. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits of camping in the first body paragraph to the drawbacks in the second, and finishing with your plans to join her. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'First of all', 'Another reason', and 'Apart from this', though paragraphing could be slightly better managed since the letter transitions rapidly between topics. Referencing is generally clear, though minor punctuation errors in the sign-off slightly disrupt the flow. Band score: 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'unpredictable weather conditions', 'outdoor activities', and 'reconnect to the nature'. However, there are several spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'doing' instead of 'are doing', 'summar' instead of 'summer', 'surrodings' instead of 'surroundings', 'concern' instead of 'concerns', and 'insects repellent' instead of 'insect repellent'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher band. Band score: 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Not only you can see peaceful surrodings, but also you can participate in some outdoor activities...'. However, this sentence suffers from awkward subject-verb inversion after 'Not only' (it should be 'Not only can you see...'). There are also grammatical inaccuracies like 'you might have face' instead of 'you might face' and minor missing auxiliary verbs such as 'I hope you doing well'. Punctuation and capitalization errors also appear at the start of sentences and in the concluding lines. Overall, errors occasionally surface but communication remains clear. Band score: 6.0.
