Student answer (Band 6.5)
I hope you are doing well. I came to know that you are planning to go on camping this summer. It would be a great opportunity to escape from your daily routine and reconnect with nature. Not only you can see peaceful surroundings, but also you can participate in some outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming, fishing and experiencing cooking outside.
However, there are some demerits as well. First of all, there is some safety concern in unfamiliar places; bear or other forest animals. Another reason is unpredictable weather conditions and you might have face some discomfort. Apart from this, there can be insects and you will probably feel difficulty in sleeping. Therefore not forget to bring insect repellent.
Yes, I would love to join you in this summer. It will be a great opportunity to spend quality time together and make some memories. I would suggest you to book a campsite in advance and let me know the details as well.
Write me back and see you soon,
Best wishes,
Sukhveer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. The letter begins appropriately and establishes a friendly tone. The first bullet point is well addressed by explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, such as escaping the daily routine and engaging in outdoor activities like hiking and swimming. The second bullet point is covered by describing potential disadvantages, including safety concerns with wild animals, unpredictable weather, and discomfort. The final point is addressed by clearly confirming the desire to join the friend this summer and suggesting booking a campsite in advance. The purpose of the letter is entirely clear and the tone is appropriate for writing to a friend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'First of all', 'Another reason', and 'Apart from this'. However, some transitions and referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'there is some safety concern in unfamiliar places; bear or other forest animals' lacks smooth integration, and the transition 'Therefore not forget to bring' contains a grammatical slip affecting the logical flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate and appropriate for a general correspondence task. The student attempts some less common lexical items such as 'reconnect with nature', 'unpredictable weather conditions', and 'insect repellent'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'go on camping' instead of 'go camping', 'demerits' instead of 'disadvantages', and 'feel difficulty' instead of 'have difficulty'. Despite these occasional errors, meaning is never obscured, and the vocabulary is sufficient for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using correlative conjunctions ('Not only you can see..., but also you can participate...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including word order issues ('Not only you can see' should be 'Not only can you see'), missing subjects or auxiliary verbs ('you might have face some discomfort'), and imperative errors ('Therefore not forget to bring' instead of 'Therefore, do not forget to bring'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they persist frequently enough to prevent a higher band.
