Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Leah,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to advice you on the camping holiday you are interested to go for the first time this summer. To be honest, I am excited and happy for you that you finally took some time out of your busy schedule and want to have some quality time with your family. I feel taking a break from our monotonous schedule is important for our mental and social well being. I get nostalgic thinking about the last fall I went for camping with my family and had a fun time planning and experiencing it with my little ones. Though, initially I was skeptical to go with the little ones but my husband convinced me and I thanked him later. You can do BBQ over their they have these designated places made especially for cooking. Fishing is something you will definitely enjoy with your husband. I wish you have some good catch. Moreover, strolling is the most exciting and relaxing activity you can do in State parks.

There might be some possible disadvantage if you don't plan things according to the weather. The temperature at nights usually goes down so be prepared to warm your tent with a heater or carry slipping bags. In addition to this, keep tube lamps, logs and extra food in case of any emergency. Always keep your eyes on creepy crawlies and poisonous bugs around. Please, keep the first aid and essential medicines/sprays handy.

It would be great if I could join you on this camping holiday we would have a fun time together like old days, but unfortunetly my son is not keeping well due to viral fever and he needs some extra care and assistance at home. Otherwise, I would love to be the part of this summer holiday. I wish you create beautiful memories with your family on this holiday. Wish you all the luck and happiness.

Yours lovingly,

Sania

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You explain why your friend Leah would enjoy a camping holiday by mentioning activities like barbecuing, fishing, and strolling in state parks. You also describe possible disadvantages, such as nighttime temperature drops and encountering insects, offering practical preparation tips. Finally, you clearly state whether you would like to join her this summer, explaining that you cannot because of your son's viral fever. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, and your ideas are fully developed and extended. Overall, the task is handled very well, meeting all the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter has a clear and logical overall progression. You use standard friendly letter conventions to open and close. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different parts of the prompt, with the first paragraph focusing on the enjoyment and reasons to go, the second addressing disadvantages and tips, and the third explaining why you cannot join. Cohesive devices such as 'To be honest', 'Though, initially', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to this' are generally well managed, although occasional transitions could be smoother. Referencing is clear throughout, and the letter flows naturally as a communication between friends.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal letter. You successfully incorporate less common phrases such as 'monotonous schedule', 'social well being', 'creepy crawlies', and 'essential medicines'. However, there are a few minor vocabulary and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'to advice you' instead of 'to advise you' and 'doing BBQ over their' instead of 'there'. Spelling is generally accurate, with the exception of 'unfortunetly'. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary effectively conveys your meaning and allows for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures ('if you don't plan things') and relative clauses. There are several error-free sentences, and punctuation is generally handled well. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'interested to go' instead of 'interested in going', 'carry slipping bags' instead of 'sleeping bags', and missing commas in compound sentences. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the grammar score from reaching the highest bands. Overall, control over grammar is solid for a general training task.
