Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raju,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am very glad that you are seeking advise from me about camping holiday. Last summer, My family and I visited harrison hot spring with few others family. We enjoyed alot there.

As i know that you would like to explore different places and by doing camping, you come to know culture , food & people living there. I defenitely recommended that you should go to camping holiday. You will enjoy beautiful scenery, mountains and lakes. There are numerous acitivities for kids and adults like lake boating, water slides etc.

One of the major disadvantage you will face that hotels are costly. You have to book hotel in advanced due to number of people want to go there in this summer to enjoy incredible weather. And it is hard to find vegetarian restaurant as your wife does not eat non-veg food.

I will have daysoff next week, In addition, Kids have sammer vacation too. It has be way long time since we caught up. Therefore, My family and i would like to join camping holiday with you, if you guys dont mind.

Yours,

Maddy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The writer successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task. First, they explain why the friend would enjoy camping by highlighting the beautiful scenery, mountains, lakes, and various activities for adults and children. Second, they describe disadvantages, noting that hotels are costly, bookings must be made in advance, and finding vegetarian restaurants may be challenging. Finally, they clearly state their desire to join the camping trip this summer, provided the friend does not mind. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The ideas are relevant and adequately developed, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 in Task Achievement, leaning towards Band 6 due to minor generalisations in the disadvantages section.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct function corresponding to the prompt requirements. The greeting and sign-off are appropriate. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'As i know that', 'One of the major disadvantage', and 'Therefore'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or faulty, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('As i know', 'One of the major disadvantage you will face that'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Overall, the structural arrangement meets the descriptors for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas related to travel, family, and camping (e.g., 'explore different places', 'scenery', 'vegetarian restaurant', 'daysoff'). There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'advise' instead of 'advice', 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'acitivities' instead of 'activities', and 'sammer' instead of 'summer'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'non-veg food' is somewhat informal or unnatural. These lexical errors and limitations place the response firmly in the Band 6 category, as they do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if you guys dont mind') and subordinate clauses ('As i know that you would like...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('a camping holiday', 'in advance'), incorrect preposition use ('go to camping'), subject-verb agreement issues ('number of people want'), and capitalization errors ('My family and I visited harrison hot spring with few others family'). Punctuation mistakes also occur, such as comma splices ('I will have daysoff next week, In addition, Kids have sammer vacation too'). These errors mean that simple sentences are often more accurate than complex ones, aligning with Band 5.5 or Band 6.
