Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rahul,
How have you been? I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to give you some advice about a summer camping holiday, as you asked during our phone call. There are many benefits to reserving a camping spot. Firstly, you will get exposure to professional equipment, as the team will teach you how to identify birds using advanced binoculars. The camp's main aim is to educate youngsters more about the conservation of birds and wildlife.
There are possible disadvantages as well. If you are going for the first time, you have to take care of your belongings, as there are groups of monkeys steals luggage sometimes. Recently, I went to this summer camp, and I lost my spectacles there. Moreover, the exact place is Natural Conversation Park, so there are chances of snakes, leopards, and cheetahs; take care while sleeping at the camp.
I wish I could go along with you, but I have other personal commitments. Let me know if you need any other suggestions.
Best regards,
Devanshi Vasani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. Firstly, the writer explains why Rahul would enjoy camping by highlighting the educational aspects and exposure to professional equipment such as advanced binoculars and wildlife conservation. Secondly, potential disadvantages are described, including cheeky monkeys stealing belongings and the presence of dangerous wildlife like snakes, leopards, and cheetahs. Finally, the writer clearly states why they cannot go along this summer due to personal commitments. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are extended with relevant supporting details. Overall, all requirements of the task have been met satisfactorily, aligning well with the Band 7 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introductory greeting and purpose, reasons for enjoying camping, disadvantages, and finally concluding remarks regarding going together. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'If you are going for the first time' are used effectively to connect ideas, although some transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the letter. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing that meets the expectations for a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'exposure to professional equipment', 'conservation of birds and wildlife', and 'personal commitments'. However, there are some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, most notably 'Natural Conversation Park' instead of 'Conservation Park' and 'monkeys steals luggage' instead of 'monkeys steal luggage'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance which rounds to a 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditionals like 'If you are going for the first time, you have to take care of your belongings' and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors present, such as 'monkeys steals luggage' (subject-verb agreement error) and the awkward phrasing in 'there are chances of snakes, leopards, and cheetahs; take care while sleeping at the camp.' Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors do not impede overall communication. The control over grammar is adequate for a Band 6, where simple and complex structures are mixed with some persistent errors.
