Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Yash,

Yesterday, I received your letter and am glad that you asked me the best place about your first camping trip. I am writing this letter to give some suggestions for your outing.

I recommend you visit the Vadodara camping site, which is one-hour drive from your home. As you told me earlier, you love to do trekking and like to spend quality time in a greenery place; therefore, you definitely like this location. The management will provide a plethora of adventure activities, meals and accommodations without taking a single fee from natives.

Moreover, there are hundreds of people attending campsite during their summer break and you will love their company. However, you might see a bunch of individuals because it is openly available for everyone. In addition their food quality is not excellent.

Furthermore, if you are planning to go their after May, I would love to join your. Please let me know when you will go their.

I hope you like my advice and will wait for your response.

Yours lovingly,

Ravi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You explain why your friend would enjoy a camping holiday by mentioning trekking and quality time in a green environment at the Vadodara campsite. You also describe possible disadvantages, such as the large crowd and subpar food quality. Finally, you state whether you would like to go camping with your friend this summer by confirming your availability after May. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and adequately developed to fulfill the communicative purpose of the prompt, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing specific prompts, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the recommendations, the disadvantages, and the invitation. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Furthermore' are employed to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical (e.g., 'there are hundreds of people attending campsite' and 'In addition their food quality'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, representing a coherent piece of correspondence that meets the standard for this band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common lexical items such as 'plethora', 'adventure activities', and 'accommodations'. However, there are several word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as writing 'greenery place' instead of 'green place' or 'greenery', 'taking a single fee' instead of 'charging a fee', and 'attending campsite' instead of 'attending the campsite'. Additionally, there are minor typos like 'there' instead of 'their' ('go their after May'). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains appropriate for a friendly letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. You successfully use conditional structures ('if you are planning to go... I would love to join') and relative clauses ('which is one-hour drive from your home'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'best place about your first camping trip' (instead of 'advice about'), 'you definitely like this location' (missing 'would'), and missing prepositions or articles ('join your' instead of 'join you', 'go their' instead of 'go there'). Punctuation is generally fine, but these recurrent slips place the grammar firmly in this band.
