Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Jackie,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to your letter regarding why you should go on a camping holiday for the first time this summer. As you know, you are busy in the IT business so this is the best time go outside and enjoy a picnic at the beach.

Firstly, I know that you take a lot of stress with their business, and you also suffer from a fatal disease for the last two years. Therefore, you take extra burden with their work when it is not complete on time. So I think it is the best time to refresh your mind. As a result, you become more productive for their business.

Secondly, you should also massage sunscreen cream on your body when you go outside. Beacuse sun's UV rays very dangerous for body. You should carry extra sunscreen with you.

Finally, You should also go camping with their office' worker. So you get a chance to spend more time with them.

I hope my advice will be helpful. Please let me know what you decide, and I wish you all the best.

Best wishes,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing a camping holiday and suggesting reasons your friend would enjoy it, alongside mentioning some advice like sunscreen. However, the bullet points of the task are only partially covered. While the first point is touched upon regarding refreshing the mind, the second bullet point regarding disadvantages is largely missed and replaced by unrelated advice about sunscreen and colleagues. Furthermore, mentioning that your friend suffers from a fatal disease is unnatural and off-topic for the prompt scenario. The tone is somewhat inappropriate for a friendly letter. Consequently, the task achievement is limited by these missed requirements and awkward developments, fitting the band 5 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter follows a standard format with a clear salutation and sign-off. Paragraphing is attempted with distinct breaks between ideas, using basic cohesive markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally'. However, the logical progression is flawed because the ideas do not tie together cohesively under the headings promised. For instance, the second paragraph mixes business stress and medical conditions with the concept of relaxation, and the third paragraph abruptly introduces sunscreen advice rather than camping disadvantages. Referencing is occasionally confusing, such as pronoun shifts ('their business', 'their work'). Overall, the structural organization shows some coherence, but the flow and mechanical use of cohesive devices align it with a band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, such as 'best time', 'extra burden', and 'extra sunscreen'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including awkward phrases like 'massage sunscreen cream on your body' and 'take a lot of stress with their business'. The term 'fatal disease' is also an incorrect lexical choice in this friendly context, likely meant to be a minor illness or exhaustion. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic points, these inaccuracies restrict the lexical score to band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex forms often contain errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'suffer from a fatal disease for the last two years' (tense error) and 'Beacuse sun's UV rays very dangerous for body' (missing article and verb). Pronoun inconsistency is also prevalent, such as using 'their' instead of 'your' when addressing the friend directly ('with their business', 'with their work'). Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader, which places the grammatical performance solidly at band 5.
