Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Jackie,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to your letter regarding why you should go on a camping holiday for the first time this summer. As you know, you are busy in the IT business so this is the best time to go outside and enjoy a picnic at the beach.

Firstly, I know that you have a lot of stress with their business, and you also suffer from a fatal disease. Therefore, you have extra burden with their work when it is not complete on time. So I think it is the best time to refresh your mind. As a result, you become more productive for your business.

Secondly, you should also massage sunscreen cream on your body when you go outside. Beacuse UV rays of sun very dangerous for body. You should carry extra sunscreen with you.

Finally, you should also go camping with their office' workers. So you get a chance to spend more time with them.

I hope my advice will be helpful. Please let me know what you decide, and I wish you all the best.

Best wishes,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover all parts of the prompt, but the bullet points are addressed with mixed success. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping by connecting it to escaping work stress and refreshing the mind, which is relevant. However, when describing disadvantages, you pivot into giving health instructions about sunscreen instead of discussing typical camping drawbacks like bad weather, insects, or lack of comfort. Furthermore, the final bullet point asks whether you would like to go camping with your friend, but your response says 'you should also go camping with their office workers,' which fails to directly state your own intention to join them. Because some bullet points are only partially or inappropriately addressed, this falls under Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter uses some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'As a result,' and 'Finally' to structure the paragraphs, which provides a simple framework. However, the logical progression is weak because the content within the body paragraphs often shifts off-topic or introduces illogical ideas, such as mentioning a 'fatal disease' out of context. Paragraphing is attempted with separate sections for each point, but referencing is sometimes confusing, particularly with pronoun choices like mixing up 'your' and 'their.' Overall arrangement shows basic organization but lacks clear overall progression and appropriate cohesive control, warranting a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent awkward word choices and unnatural collocations. For example, the phrases 'massage sunscreen cream' and 'fatal disease' are inappropriate for a friendly letter about camping and suggest a misunderstanding of word meanings. While you attempt some less common topics, such as 'productive' and 'stress,' the lexical range remains limited. Spelling is generally acceptable, but word-choice errors are noticeable and occasionally cause confusion for the reader. This performance aligns with the Band 5 descriptors for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and attempted complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is quite low. There are frequent errors in prepositions, pronouns, and conjunctions, such as 'you are busy in the IT business' instead of 'work in IT', and 'Beacuse UV rays of sun very dangerous' which contains a missing verb and a spelling error. Pronoun referencing is also problematic, as seen in 'your business' followed by 'their business' and 'their work.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited range of structures with persistent inaccuracy, placing this response at Band 5.
