Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Jackie,

How are you? I am writing in response to your letter which I recently receiving. You should go on a picnic holiday from break your demanding job.

Firstly, I know that you do hard work to complete your family rquirements. I would like to say that you should go on acamping to change your mind, and I know that You have a demading job in IT sector and excessive amount of work to complete before deadline. Therefore, you have a lot of stress about your work. So you should go to outside to become more productive for your business' growth.

Secondly, you should also take care of your body from the UV rays of the sun when you go on a picnic, and you should apply sunscreen on your body before go to outside.

Finally, according to me, I think that it is the best idea if you will be go with your office worker at the beach, and you have a chance to spend time with them.

I hope my advice will be helful. Please, let me know what you decide, and I wish you all the best.

Kind regards,

Jass.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, though there is a noticeable confusion regarding the activity type. Throughout the letter, the student repeatedly refers to a 'picnic holiday' instead of a camping holiday, which affects the task focus. However, the writer does explain why the friend might enjoy a nature break to escape work stress, attempts to describe disadvantages by mentioning the sun and UV rays, and suggests going with office colleagues to spend time together. The tone is mostly appropriate for a letter to a friend, but the inconsistent understanding of camping lowers the overall development of ideas. To reach a higher band, the response must accurately stick to the specified topic of camping and elaborate more clearly on the specific pros and cons associated with it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter is organised into standard paragraph breaks with an appropriate greeting and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' are used to structure the points, though they feel somewhat mechanical and forced. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical progression between sentences is occasionally disrupted by confusing phrasing, such as abruptly shifting from work stress to sun protection. Referencing is also sometimes unclear, for instance, when the writer mentions going with 'office worker at the beach'. While the overall arrangement is visible, the lack of smooth transitions and occasional confusion in how ideas link together place this firmly in the middle bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive. The student uses common words like 'job', 'work', 'stress', and 'idea', alongside noticeable errors such as 'rquirements' and 'demading'. There are also inappropriate collocations, such as 'picnic holiday' instead of camping trip, and 'change your mind' when meaning to unwind or relax. Less common lexical items are attempted, but they are often inaccurate or poorly chosen. Although the meaning is generally communicated despite the vocabulary limitations, the frequent word-choice errors and restricted range prevent the score from rising higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is quite low due to frequent errors. Examples include 'which I recently receiving', 'from break your demanding job', 'go on acamping', 'before go to outside', and 'if you will be go'. These errors involve tense misuse, incorrect prepositions, redundant auxiliary verbs, and missing articles. While the reader can still understand the intended message, the high density of structural errors means that error-free sentences are in the minority. This corresponds directly to the band 5 descriptor where frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
