Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to advise you about going on a camping holiday for the first time this summer.
I would suggest that you must go on a camping holiday. I can recall the number of times you've mentioned to me about going on a camping holiday in the last three years. You always wanted it and finally you got the chance so there shouldn't be a second thought on going to this holiday.
Moreover, I am sure you'll have a lot of fun, as you love nature and have always admired it. There are some possible disadvantages so just make sure you are well prepared for it before hand. Keep an extra bag of snacks and water bottles with you because it's hard to find clean water during camping, as the destination is secluded and far away from the city. I've heard of people getting stomach related issues there. Therefore, be very careful with food and water.
I would also love to join you. In fact, I've already applied for office leave. Though, the probability of getting it is very low due to high work load. Anyways, I will try my best to join you during this camping holiday.
Take care and keep me updated.
Many thanks,
Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student covers all bullet points of the prompt thoroughly and appropriately. The letter begins by explaining why John would enjoy camping, touching on his love for nature. Disadvantages are adequately described, including the difficulty of finding clean water and potential stomach issues in a secluded location. Finally, the response clearly addresses whether Asad would like to go camping with him this summer, mentioning that he has applied for leave. The tone is consistently friendly and suitable for a letter to a friend. The requirements of the task are fully met with well-developed ideas, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing specific bullet points, and an appropriate closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different topics, such as the benefits of camping, disadvantages, and the possibility of joining. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In fact'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother in places (e.g., 'going to this holiday'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'secluded and far away from the city', 'applied for office leave', and 'stomach related issues' show a natural control of language. There are some slight lexical inaccuracies, such as 'going to this holiday' instead of 'going on this holiday', and 'stomach related issues' which could be phrased more natively as 'stomach upsets'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, representing a clear Band 6.5 to 7 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing includes a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Though, the probability of getting it is very low...'). Grammatical control is generally quite good, with numerous error-free sentences (e.g., 'I hope this letter finds you well' and 'Keep an extra bag of snacks and water bottles with you'). Minor slips do occur, such as 'before hand' (should be 'beforehand') and starting a sentence with 'Though,' followed by a comma fragment. However, these errors do not impede communication at all, reflecting solid command over the grammar used.
