Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are in your good health. It's been so long when we last communicated. I heard that you are thinking about going on a camping trip this holidays for the very first time. I have lots of tips and trick for you.

Let me expalin in detail. This is going to be your new experience. As we all have lived in different cities and towns, but this time you are going to spend a little more time in jungle far away from city life. Moreover, you will experience fresh air, quiet atmosphere and serene sceneries.

There are quite some cons as well. Firstly, the lack of equipments for cooking meals. For example you have to make your own fire to prepare some food. Also, to stay warm at night. Additionally, you have to manage with whatever you have in your bag. This means you have to be prepared for wild animals, insects and most importantly survival.

This year I am going to skip my trip, as I am busy with my work schedules. But, I would love to go out with you next season. If you need any help don't hesitate to reach out. I will see you very soon.

Warm wishes,

Y.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping by highlighting the fresh air, quiet atmosphere, and serene sceneries. You also described the possible disadvantages, such as the lack of cooking equipment, making your own fire, and the need to manage potential encounters with wild animals or insects. Finally, you clearly stated that you would not be able to go camping with your friend this summer due to work schedules, but expressed enthusiasm for going next season. The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a letter to a peer. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant, well-developed ideas, fulfilling the requirements for this task nicely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression from opening remarks to explaining benefits, discussing drawbacks, and giving a concluding response about joining the trip. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each major point given its own paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, including phrases like 'Moreover,' 'There are quite some cons as well,' 'Firstly,' and 'Additionally.' However, some transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could occasionally be smoother. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, supporting a clear and logical flow of ideas throughout the entire correspondence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter. You attempted some less common vocabulary items and descriptive phrases such as 'serene sceneries,' 'quiet atmosphere,' and 'survival.' There are, however, some minor lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'in your good health' (instead of 'in good health'), 'tips and trick' (should be plural 'tricks'), 'expalin' (a spelling slip), and 'lack of equipments' (equipment is uncountable). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary successfully conveys your message without causing any real difficulty for the reader, showing a flexible range suitable for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional sentences ('If you need any help don't hesitate to reach out') and participial modifiers ('As we all have lived in different cities...'). The majority of sentences are clear, though there are several grammatical and punctuation errors. Examples include sentence fragments ('For example you have to make your own fire... Also, to stay warm at night.'), tense or preposition slips like 'It's been so long when we last communicated' (instead of 'since'), and minor punctuation omissions. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and your control over grammar is generally sufficient to make the meaning clear.
