Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jay,

I received your letter in which you informed that you are going for a camping on your holidays. I read every single word describing your excitement for your first ever camping. I am also happy that you asked me to advice you regarding camping. I would say, Enjoy every single moment of the camping. It would be your best experience out there. Carry eadable things and more water as well, because hiking in between or walking would make you thirsty and hungry. Do not forget to take cooking heater and some kitchen equipments. Make sure the tent you guys are buying is made up of good fabric that would be strong.

Also I would suggest you to bear some disadvantages of going to camping, for example: unpredictable weather, insects and wildlife, limited comfort and limited security. So keep everything in your mind before going.

I wish I could go with you for camping, but I need to visit my grandparents and spent some quality time with them. I hope you would understand and better consider my suggestions.

Yours Truly

Anmol

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy the camping trip by highlighting the excitement and recommending preparation such as carrying 'eadable things and more water.' You also describe possible disadvantages, mentioning 'unpredictable weather, insects and wildlife, limited comfort and limited security.' Finally, you clearly state whether you would like to go camping by explaining that you need to visit your grandparents. While all parts are addressed, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping is quite brief and could be expanded with more personal flavour or vivid description to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows an appropriate friendly letter format, beginning with a proper salutation ('Dear Jay') and ending with a sign-off ('Yours Truly Anmol'). Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as general advice, disadvantages, and your personal availability. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the opening sentences where you repeatedly reference receiving the letter. Transitional phrases between sentences could be used more flexibly and naturally to ensure a smoother logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to camping, such as 'unpredictable weather,' 'wildlife,' and 'cooking heater.' However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing that prevent the score from being higher. For instance, 'eadable things' appears to be a typographical error for edible things or food, and phrases like 'cooking heater' and 'kitchen equipments' (equipment is uncountable) are unnatural. Improving precision in everyday and topic-specific collocations will greatly enhance your lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses like 'fabric that would be strong' and 'I received your letter in which you informed that...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices throughout the text, including 'going for a camping on your holidays,' 'advice you' (instead of advise), and 'spent some quality time' (instead of spend). Punctuation and article usage also need closer attention. Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to keep the grammatical accuracy at the current level.
