Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Amita,
I hope you and your family members are doing great. I got your letter last Monday, in the letter you mentioned me that you are planning to go for camping holiday in this summer for the time. I would like to request you to go in Lake district which is very famous for out camping and the full of natural resources where you will definately gonna enjoy boating, hiking and rock climbing. I'm pretty sure you will tell me about your journey when you will return from the trip.
But my friend there are few drawbacks during camping. You may be sick because of weather change. And another thing is there isnot any nearby village or any shop so if you need any thing you may have to go soo far where you can find some local shops but which won't be useful at all. So I would like to inform you take all belonging including medicines and other useful products and don't forget to take fire equipment.
This summer I'm also going camping with my office staff in Wales. Hopefully you gonna enjoy your camping trip. Please don't forget to write letter back to me about your journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all three parts of the prompt, but the coverage is limited and the ideas are under-developed. For instance, the suggestion to visit the Lake District is made, but the explanation of why your friend would enjoy it relies on a simple list of activities like "boating, hiking and rock climbing" without further expansion. Similarly, the disadvantages are touched upon, such as the weather change and lack of nearby shops, but these points lack depth. The third bullet point is also addressed by mentioning that you are going camping in Wales with your office staff, but it fails to explicitly confirm whether you would join your friend this summer, leaving the stance slightly unclear. To move to a higher band, each bullet point needs to be fully extended and supported with clearer details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter demonstrates some overall organisation with a clear beginning and ending, but there is a lack of clear progression throughout the body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'and' to connect clauses (e.g., "And another thing is..."). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas could be more logical, as the transition between the benefits, disadvantages, and your own summer plans feels a bit abrupt. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use referring back to previous sentences. To improve cohesion, you should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally and ensure each paragraph focuses on a distinct, well-sequenced aspect of the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as writing "for camping holiday in this summer for the time" instead of 'for the first time', and "out camping" instead of 'outdoor camping'. Other errors include spelling and word form mistakes like "definately" and "belonging" instead of belongings. While the meaning can generally be understood, these inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider range of less common vocabulary and demonstrate better control over word formation, spelling, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing shows a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including missing articles (e.g., "in Lake district"), incorrect prepositions (e.g., "go in Lake district"), and tense inconsistencies or awkward verb patterns like "you mentioned me that" and "there isnot any nearby village". Punctuation is also basic, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate separation. To improve your grammar score, you need to use a wider mix of error-free complex structures and pay closer attention to articles, prepositions, and basic sentence construction.
