Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Friend,

I’m really glad to hear that you are thinking about going camping for the first time this summer. I definitely think you would enjoy it because you love spending time outdoors and trying new activities. Camping is a great way to relax, enjoy nature and take a break from your usual daily routine. You could also go hiking, cook food outside and spend evenings around a campfire.

However, there are some disadvantages that you should consider. Firstly, sleeping in a tent can be uncomfortable, especially if the weather is cold or rainy. There may also be insects such as mosquitoes, and you might find it difficult to sleep properly. In addition, you have to carry and prepare a lot of equipment, including a tent, sleeping bag, food and cooking supplies.

I would definitely like to go camping with you this summer. It would be more enjoyable and safer if we went together, especially because it would be your first camping trip. We could choose a campsite with good facilities and plan everything in advance.

Let me know what you think. I’m looking forward to having a great outdoor adventure together!

Best wishes,

Jashan

Your letter covers all parts of the prompt very well and addresses every bullet point fully. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy a camping holiday by mentioning outdoor interests, relaxation, hiking, and campfires. You also appropriately describe possible disadvantages, such as uncomfortable sleeping conditions in tents, insects, and the heavy burden of carrying equipment. Finally, you clearly state your desire to go camping together this summer, supporting this with logical reasons like safety and shared planning. Your ideas are well-developed and easy to follow, maintaining an appropriate tone and format for a semi-formal/informal letter throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Your ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction of the topic to the benefits, drawbacks, and your final proposal. You use paragraphing appropriately and sufficiently, dedicating each paragraph to a distinct theme (advantages, disadvantages, and your joint trip proposal). Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'However' are managed well to connect your thoughts. Progression throughout the letter is clear, and referencing between sentences is consistently accurate and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task. You use appropriate lexical items related to the topic, such as 'daily routine', 'campsite', 'facilities', and 'outdoor adventure'. To reach an even higher standard, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common idiomatic phrases and precise descriptive vocabulary, though your current selection is fully adequate and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

You display a wide range of grammatical structures with a high level of accuracy. The majority of your sentences are error-free, utilizing complex structures effectively, such as conditional clauses ('especially if the weather is cold or rainy') and modal verbs ('you have to carry', 'We could choose'). Verb forms, tenses, articles, and prepositions are handled with strong control. Punctuation is accurate, and there are only very occasional minor slips, allowing for smooth and effortless reading.
