Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Simar,

I hope this letter finds you in the spirits. It's been a while we haven't seen each other, isn't ? I am delighted to know that you are planning to go for camping coming summer.

As you know that I am a travel enthusiast, I would like to mention some of the benefits of going on camping holiday. Firstly, I believe this is the best opportunity for you to enjoy some time with your friends which can gives you a peace of mind and a break from a hectic schedule. Secondly, camping places are quite serene and tranquile, which help us to get positivity and make our mind more active.

As there are pros of camping holiday, there are also some cons as well. Although camping holiday provides benefits of going out with a group of members, there are some circumstances where you can feel alone away from your family. Moreover, there would be some places where you can lost and find wild animals or snakes, which can harm you. Therefore, you have to be very careful about that.

I would love to give you a company for your camping holiday. I think it is the best time when we can meet each other and we can enjoy the camping together.I will send you some activities, which we can enjoy during the camping holiday.

I hope you will like this plan. I can't wait to see you.

With love,

Parwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence task. You clearly explain why your friend Simar would enjoy camping, mentioning benefits such as spending time with friends and experiencing serene environments. You also outline potential disadvantages, such as feeling lonely away from family and encountering wild animals or snakes. Finally, you confirm your desire to join Simar this summer. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the point about feeling lonely or encountering wildlife is introduced briefly without much extension. To reach a higher level, these points could be expanded with more specific examples or context, ensuring every bullet point is explored with equal depth and elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose, from the opening greeting and explanation of benefits to the discussion of drawbacks and your offer to accompany your friend. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. While cohesion is generally managed well, referencing and transitions occasionally feel a bit mechanical rather than entirely natural. To push into higher bands, ensure that cohesive links blend seamlessly into the text rather than relying on standard formulaic transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'travel enthusiast', 'serene', and 'tranquile'. However, there are several word choice, spelling, and word form errors throughout the letter, such as spelling 'tranquile' with an 'e' at the end, writing 'go for camping' instead of 'go camping', and using 'gives' instead of 'give'. Furthermore, phrases like 'make our mind more active' sound slightly unnatural in collocation. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict your score because of occasional inaccuracies in word choice and spelling. Using more precise collocations and checking spelling carefully will help improve this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses using conjunctions like 'although' and 'where'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present. For instance, the opening sentence contains a preposition and phrasing issue ('in the spirits' and 'It's been a while we haven't seen each other, isn't ?'), and there is an article misuse in 'for camping coming summer'. You also miss an object in 'where you can lost'. These errors persist throughout the text, meaning that while communication is rarely impeded, error-free sentences are not frequent enough to secure a higher band. Focusing on verb forms, prepositions in patterns, and careful punctuation will strengthen your grammatical control.
