Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ali,

I am really happy to hear that you are thinking about going on a company holiday for the first time. I would definately recommend it because camping is a best way to relax and enjoy nature. You can spend time away from the busy city and enjoy beautiful scenery and take part in activities such as hiking, fishing and cooking. It can also be a great opportunity to make unforgettable memories with your friends.

However, there are few disadvantages that we should consider. The weather can be some time unpredictable, and rain can make camping quite uncomfortable. You may also have to deal with the insects and limited bathroom facilities.

I would love to go camping with you this summer. I think it would be much more enjoyable if we went together and spend time together.

Let me know what you think. I hope we can plan the trip soon.

Best wishes,

Bilal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the task prompt, addressing the friend, explaining why they would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and clearly stating that you would like to join them. All bullet points are present and directly addressed. For instance, you explain that camping is a great way to relax, hike, and cook, and you outline clear drawbacks such as unpredictable weather and limited bathroom facilities. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended; for example, the mention of dealing with insects and limited facilities is brief and could be expanded to show more detail. To move into higher bands, ensure every point is thoroughly elaborated with richer context and deeper explanation while maintaining a clear and appropriate tone throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You establish an appropriate informal opening and close your letter naturally with sign-offs like 'Best wishes, Bilal'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the task: the greeting and opening enthusiasm, the benefits, the disadvantages, the invitation, and the closing remarks. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'However', 'It can also be', and 'I would love to', to link your ideas together smoothly. While cohesion functions well overall, making your referencing even more seamless and ensuring a wider variety of transitional phrases without any mechanical feel will help elevate your organisational skills further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using common items and attempting some less common phrases like 'unforgettable memories' and 'unpredictable'. However, there are a few notable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'company holiday' instead of 'camping holiday' and the spelling mistake 'definately' instead of 'definitely'. Additionally, phrases like 'camping is a best way' contain minor usage inaccuracies. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight areas where precision in word choice, collocation, and spelling needs improvement. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of less common lexical items with greater accuracy and natural control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as 'I am really happy to hear that...' and 'I think it would be much more enjoyable if...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'the insects' with an unnecessary definite article and the tense slip 'and spend time together' where 'spent' or 'spending' would fit better alongside 'we went'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your overall meaning remains entirely clear. To achieve a higher level of grammatical performance, you should work on increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and polishing your control over articles, prepositions, and verb tense consistency.
