Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sarah,

I'm glad to hear that you're thinking to going camping for the first time this summer. I think you would really enjoy it because it will give you a chance to take break from your busy routine and spend some time in nature. You could enjoy activities such as hiking, cooking outdoors and sitting around campfire in the nature. I could be a great opportunity to relax and create some memories in nature.

However, camping does have a few disadvantages. The weather can be unpredictableand you may have to deal with insects, rain or uncomfortable sleeping. You also need to prepare and carry a lot of equipments, which can be tiring if you are not used to it. Despite this challenges, I think they can be managed with proper planning.

I would definitely love to go on camping with you this summer. It would be more enjoyable if we went together, and we could share the responsibilities of preparing the meals nd setting up the tent. Let me kow what dates are you considering to go and we can start planning.

Best Wishes,

Srushti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You explain clearly why Sarah would enjoy camping by mentioning a break from routine and outdoor activities, describe the possible disadvantages such as unpredictable weather and insects, and explicitly state your desire to join her this summer. The position and purpose of the letter are clear throughout. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully elaborated, such as the specific details of outdoor cooking or the exact challenges of equipment preparation, placing this part of the writing solidly within the expectations for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct part of the prompt requirements. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Despite this challenges' to guide the reader. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical, and there is a slight error in referencing form where 'this challenges' should be 'these challenges'. The progression of ideas flows naturally, resulting in a cohesive piece of correspondence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and functional phrases, such as 'unpredictable', 'busy routine', and 'share the responsibilities'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and word choice slips, such as 'thinking to going camping' instead of 'thinking of going', 'sitting around campfire' missing an article, 'equipments' used as a plural countable noun, and a typo in 'know' ('Let me kow'). These inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with adequate control over basic structures. You successfully incorporate relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if you are not used to it' and 'if we went together'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'It would be a great opportunity' (written as 'I could be a great opportunity'), 'go on camping' instead of 'go camping', and a slight word order issue in 'what dates are you considering to go'. These errors are intermittent and rarely impede communication, reflecting typical control at this level.
