Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Tanu,
Long time, no see! It's been ages, I haven't met you. I really miss you.
I am writing as a follow ups of you last letter regarding advice for your uncoming camping holidays. I'm so glad that you finally make your mind for going on a campsite this summer.
The reason why I believe that it would be full of fun is that you will get escape from your monotonous lifestyle and mind would be refresh. This is because the atmosphere would be completely different and you can enjoy various activities like hiking, walking, and exploring wildlife which provide you different prospective of life.
However, you may find difficulties throughout your trip. Since, it's your first visit to such place you should be aware about wildlife animals, especially during night time. Attack of bears is common in campsites areas, so always be in groups and carry pepper spray all the time with you.
Unfortunately, I would not be able to join you this time because of my workplace commitment. Surely, I will stay in touch with you through phone calls and video calls. Don't forget to send me photographs of your visit.
Have a fun!
Lots of love,
Sukh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score by covering why your friend would enjoy camping, detailing potential disadvantages, and stating your decision about joining. You explain the positive aspects well, such as escaping a monotonous lifestyle and enjoying nature, which shows parts of higher-level development. However, some ideas are more fully explored than others; for instance, the section describing disadvantages like bear attacks and carrying pepper spray is somewhat generalised and slightly under-developed in terms of nuance. Overall, the tone is appropriately friendly and conversational, fulfilling the communicative purpose of a general training letter effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You effectively use paragraphing to separate your introduction, the reasons to enjoy camping, disadvantages, your decision about joining, and the closing sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect your thoughts, such as 'The reason why', 'However', and 'Unfortunately'. While referencing is generally clear, there are slight mechanical transitions between sentences that prevent it from reaching the next band, but the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your meaning to the reader. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'monotonous lifestyle', 'prospective', and 'workplace commitment', which demonstrate an effort to go beyond basic words. However, there are some word choice, form, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'uncoming' instead of 'upcoming', 'make your mind' instead of 'make up your mind', 'wildlife animals' instead of simply 'wildlife', and 'campsites areas'. These inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they highlight limitations in lexical precision and word collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter. There are instances of good sentence construction, but the text contains several grammar and punctuation errors that keep this criterion at the current level. Examples include tense and agreement issues like 'It's been ages, I haven't met you' and 'follow ups of you last letter', as well as prepositional and article inconsistencies such as 'to such place' and 'during night time'. While these errors rarely impede communication, the presence of frequent minor structural slips means that error-free sentences are not consistent enough to reach a higher band.
