Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Daji,

I hope you are doing well. I want to share my experience of doing camping in different part of our states.

I firmly believe that you choose one of the best time of the year to enjoy your camping holiday by following long summer days. Moreover, you may find different people with whom you can enhance wonderful experience of the stargazing in remote area with tasty side dishes of the barbeque.

From my recent experience, I would therefore suggest you to carry some of the antibiotics and allergy pills to treat with the insects bites. Furthermore, some areas are widely populated with bear attacks, so make sure to keep your bon-fire ignite throughout the night.

I am interested to join you for the camping holiday but unfortunately, I have a some pre-plan for that particular weekend which are sadly unavoidable.

I hope that you enjoy your camping holiday and share your experience with me.

Yours lovingly,

Rushi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping by mentioning summer days and stargazing, describe disadvantages such as insect bites and bear attacks, and state your inability to join this summer. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or briefly stated. For instance, the mention of bear attacks is introduced abruptly without much context, and the explanation of your prior commitments in phrases like 'a some pre-plan' lacks full elaboration. To move to a higher band, all parts of the prompt would need to be extended with richer details, clearer supporting examples, and more fully fleshed-out explanations throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear friendly opening and closing. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate different topics, such as the benefits of camping in the second paragraph and the disadvantages in the third. You use cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'From my recent experience', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the transition into the disadvantages or the phrasing regarding your schedule. Achieving a higher band would require smoother, more natural transitions between sentences and a more seamless logical progression that guides the reader effortlessly from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'stargazing', 'antibiotics and allergy pills', and 'side dishes of the barbeque'. Communication is generally clear despite some lexical inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'doing camping', 'different part of our states', and 'pre-plan'. Spelling is accurate overall. To reach a higher band, you would need to use a wider range of flexible and precise vocabulary with fewer errors in collocation and natural word combinations, demonstrating a stronger control of less common lexical items and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, using structures like conditional ideas and relative clauses. There are, however, a number of noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors that persist, such as article usage and plurals ('doing camping in different part', 'one of the best time'), prepositions ('treat with the insects bites'), and determiners ('a some pre-plan'). These errors do not heavily impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to reflect this level of accuracy. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences, demonstrate better control over articles and plurals, and handle complex grammatical patterns with greater precision.
