Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well. I am glad to hear that you are planning to go on a camping holiday this summer. It would be a great experience to go camping for the first time.
It is a great opportunity from the busy routine of your work. You would be get a new environment with different experiences such as hiking, cooking outdoors, and sitting around a campfire at night.
There is possible disadvantages of camping. Therefore, the weather is unpredictable and might be very cold during the night, and sleeping in a tent may not be very comfortable for someone who is used to sleeping in a bed. There can also be insects, limited access to showers and toilets, and fewer cooking facilities than at home. Therefore, I would recommend checking the weather forecast and taking suitable equipment before leaving.
I would definitely love to go camping with you this summer. It would be much more enjoyable to share the experience with a friend, and we could help each other with setting up the tent, preparing meals and planning activities. Let me know when you are thinking of going, and we can start making arrangements together.
Best wishes,
Tanvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt with a clear and appropriate tone. You covered why your friend would enjoy camping, such as the change from a busy routine and outdoor activities like hiking and cooking. You also described potential disadvantages, mentioning unpredictable weather, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, insects, and limited facilities. Finally, you clearly stated your desire to join your friend this summer. Your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout the letter, reflecting features of higher bands while keeping a natural, friendly tone. To push even further, you could have elaborated slightly more on the personal benefits of sharing the trip together, which would fully secure the highest band level across all bullet points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organization and progression from beginning to end. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each dedicated to a specific part of the prompt, such as the benefits in the second paragraph and the drawbacks in the third. You use cohesive devices effectively to guide the reader, like using 'Therefore' to link ideas, although some transitions could be varied more naturally to avoid repetitive linking patterns. Pronoun referencing is generally clear, with phrases like 'It would be much more enjoyable' smoothly connecting back to the previous context. To improve further, ensure that every transition word precisely matches the logical relationship between sentences, as 'Therefore' was used where a contrast or simple addition might have been more suitable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task, successfully communicating your points. Phrases such as 'busy routine', 'unpredictable weather', and 'weather forecast' demonstrate a good grasp of everyday functional language. However, there are some minor word choice and collocation slips, such as writing 'You would be get a new environment' instead of 'You would get' or 'experience'. Additionally, some vocabulary choices are a bit repetitive, such as using 'great' multiple times. To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic flexibility while eliminating minor mechanical phrasing errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You successfully handle modal verbs and conditional structures, such as 'might be very cold' and 'if you are thinking of going'. However, there are some noticeable grammatical errors, most notably the verb form error in 'You would be get a new environment' and a minor logical connector misuse in starting a sentence with 'Therefore, the weather is unpredictable'. Punctuation is generally controlled, but sentence structure variety can still be expanded. To move higher, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over verb patterns and auxiliary verbs.
