Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Alex,

I hope you are doing well, I am happy to hear that you are going on a comping holiday. I am pretty sure that you would enjoy this trip. Because it will give you a sense of relief from hectic schedule and you will feel unwind.

I just want to suggest you that don't forget to carry water bottles in order to escape from heat stroks. I came to know that weather is going to be more warmer in the ensuing days and heat warning is issued. Essentail precausations like medicines, cotton clothes and cold pad can save you from severe weather. Moreover, in the evening time before going to outside, you should use mosquitoes spray.

I would be on top of the world, if i would get time off from my workplace. As i did'n get chance to visit outside the town from last few months. I want to wish you best of luck for your journey. I believe that my guidance will help you.

Best Regards

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally. While the writer manages to touch upon some of the bullet points, such as explaining why the friend would enjoy the trip and mentioning some advice and disadvantages regarding the weather, the coverage remains quite limited and under-developed. For instance, the prompt asks to explain why your friend would enjoy a camping holiday, and the writer merely states that 'it will give you a sense of relief from hectic schedule and you will feel unwind.' Furthermore, the final bullet point regarding whether you would like to go camping with your friend this summer is only partially addressed in a vague manner ('I would be on top of the world, if i would get time off from my workplace'). Overall, the ideas lack sufficient extension and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation in the letter, separating the greeting, body points, and sign-off into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, or repetitive. For example, the transitions between sentences feel disjointed, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the sudden shift from discussing weather precautions to talking about work leave without a smooth transitional link. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow of information needs better management to ensure the reader can follow the writer's thoughts effortlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common phrases, such as 'top of the world' and 'heat stroks', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'comping' is a spelling error for camping, 'feel unwind' should be 'feel unwound' or 'relax', 'Essentail precausations' contains spelling mistakes, and 'mosquitoes spray' should be 'mosquito spray'. These inaccuracies and spelling errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader, restricting the lexical score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, such as in the conditional clause 'if i would get time off', which incorrectly uses 'would' in the if-clause. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, and articles, including 'did'n get chance', 'weather is going to be more warmer', and 'in the evening time before going to outside'. Punctuation and capitalization errors are also present, such as lowercase 'i' and comma splices, which can cause difficulty for the reader.
