Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Zainab,
I am so excited to hear from you that you're finally going to your first camping trip!
I have been a frequent camper and I can assure you that it will be a life changing experience for you to cut-off from the city and your daily routine.
It is very important to look after your mental health and I believe that a certain time away from your electronic devices and emails and constant work related stress to explore nature would be a very good opportunity for you to enjoy and give your mind and body the rest that it deserves.
However, I must add that there may be a few problems that you may face when you go to camp. You may not find a good camping spot and so seeking out a good camping spot in a timely fashion would prove to be helpful. Adding to this, you also need to arrange a cellular network agreement as well as the usual operators do not supply network coverage in the many remote areas of camping. Lastly, you will have to have good stamina as the camping area is not suitable for vehicles. You will also have to factor in the fact that emergency services may not have direct access to the camping area and it may take them more time to approach you in case of an emergency.
I would have loved to join you for your camping adventure, but unfortunately, I am unable to as I have an important and very busy term of elective studies this summer. However, I have no doubt that you will definitely enjoy your camping holiday.
I wish you the best of luck for your adventure Zainab!
Warm wishes,
Ali Zaheer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task prompt, achieving a clear and friendly tone suitable for a personal letter to a friend. You clearly explain why Zainab would enjoy a camping holiday by highlighting the benefits of escaping the city and resting her mind and body. You also describe possible disadvantages effectively, such as finding a good spot, cellular network issues, and limited emergency access. Finally, you clearly state your inability to join her this summer due to your elective studies. Your ideas are well extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the general training letter format. To move towards the highest band levels, you could ensure that every single suggestion is expanded with even more nuanced personal examples or vivid details, ensuring full development without any slight over-generalisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of standard greeting and signing-off conventions, and your paragraphs are clearly separated by topic, moving from excitement and benefits to drawbacks and your final decision. You use cohesive devices flexibly, such as 'However, I must add', 'Adding to this', and 'Lastly', which guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. Although cohesion is managed well overall, slightly more varied transitional phrases rather than standard listing devices would lift the flow to an even more natural level. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of ideas from positive to negative aspects and then the conclusion works very well.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, allowing you to discuss both the mental health benefits of nature and the practical difficulties of camping. You successfully use less common items and phrasal structures, such as 'life changing experience', 'constant work related stress', and 'cellular network agreement'. There is a good awareness of style appropriate for a semi-formal or friendly letter. While word choice is generally accurate, there are occasional minor slips, such as writing 'to your first camping trip' instead of 'on', and minor stylistic awkwardness like 'cellular network agreement' instead of 'mobile coverage'. Eliminating these occasional lexical inaccuracies would help push your vocabulary score even higher.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display good control of grammar and punctuation, employing a variety of complex structures alongside simpler forms. You produce frequent error-free sentences, handling complex modal verbs and subordinate clauses effectively, as seen in sentences like 'I would have loved to join you for your camping adventure, but unfortunately, I am unable to as I have an important and very busy term of elective studies this summer.' Punctuation is handled well throughout the letter. The persistent errors are minor, such as preposition choices within specific patterns (e.g., 'going to your first camping trip' instead of 'going on'), but these do not impede communication at all. Maintaining this strong command while reducing minor prepositional slips will ensure complete grammatical precision.
