Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Oly,

I hope you are well.

I received your letter last week, and I am thrilled you are finally going to the summer camp. It is such an exciting experience and trust me, you are going to enjoy it. You will meet new friends there, some of whom are wild, and there will be bonfire nights every two days. They organise hiking and numerous sporting activities as well.

I will advise you to carry insect repellent as there are so many tiny flies that want to feast on your blood. Be careful at night due to snakes hovering around, make sure to use your touch all the time. Sometimes the meals are not as great as home, and there are only a few option to chose from.

How I wish you told me earlier, I would have obtained leave from my workplace to join you on this great adventure. I wish you all the best and keep me posted. Write to me as soon as you get back with the details of all the camping events.

Yours sincerely,

Lulu.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why the friend would enjoy camping, mentioning disadvantages such as insects, snakes, and poor meals, and addressing whether the writer can join. However, some ideas are under-developed or touch upon points slightly tangential to traditional camping, such as describing friends at a camp as 'wild' or mentioning bonfire nights 'every two days'. The tone is appropriately informal for a letter to a friend, but to move up to a higher band, the ideas regarding both the benefits and the disadvantages should be more fully extended and explored with greater clarity and relevance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, adopting standard informal letter conventions like 'Dear Oly,' and 'Yours sincerely, Lulu.'. Paragraphing is used to separate the greeting, the main body points, and the closing remarks. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between discussing the positive aspects of the camp and the negative disadvantages lacks smooth transitional markers, making the progression feel slightly abrupt. Improving the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'insect repellent' and 'great adventure'. However, there are some word choice and collocation issues that prevent a higher score, such as 'option to chose from' (spelling of choose) and 'touch' instead of 'torch'. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision in word selection, spelling, and collocation when attempting more varied vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures like conditional sentences ('I would have obtained leave'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing plural agreement in 'a few option', but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The sentence structures are generally clear, though relying more on complex sentence variations with flawless accuracy would be necessary to achieve a higher band descriptor.
